Ever since 13 Reasons Why hit Netflix last month, people have been debating whether or not the show actually did more harm than good.
Some people praise it for not being afraid to show the gruesome effects of mental health, while other people put it down for not providing helpful information for those who might need help.
In a broader perspective, no matter what side you are on, 13 Reasons Why is teaching us all a valuable lesson. On one side, it did bring to light suicide and the impact people have on others. It showed that even a small comment that may seem insignificant to you could have a serious impact on someone else.
It's also causing people to stop and evaluate how we should be covering mental health in the media and how we should be helping those affected by a mental illness. People that are opposed to the show who may be affected by depression or anxiety or another illness are sharing their personal stories, health professionals are speaking out about how to spot the signs of depression and people are coming forward with resources people can use to get help.
So no matter how you feel about the show, you have to admit it has started a conversation that will benefit us all in the long run.
