As someone who read "13 Reasons Why" at a very young age, I was thrilled to hear that it was becoming a Netflix series. The book was the first insight I had regarding anxiety, depression, and suicide. It was such a raw book and I loved how unfiltered it was. The book didn't butter up depression but embraced it entirely. It didn't try to romanticize mental disorders but showed the ugliest sides of them. The book is a classic among our generation and has helped so many people with their own mental illnesses. However, when it came to the first season of the series, I was shocked and I still don't know how to feel about it.
I wanted so badly to love this series more than anything, and I did, up until the middle of the season. It became very triggering and difficult to watch the further I got into it. As someone who struggles with depression and anxiety, it's a very difficult show to watch and finish. While I love and admire the cast and production of the show, it's a very heavy and triggering series. It's raw and doesn't romanticize suicide, but shows the realness and severity of these symptoms. It's spot on with what depression and anxiety look like and how someone can keep these things to themselves. In the series, Hannah is clearly struggling but doesn't show it or share it too much. If you didn't know her, you probably wouldn't know that she was suicidal at the time. In real life, it is often like this; you could know someone for years but never know if they were struggling with anxiety or depression unless they told you.
This show also shows the accuracy of how several lives change after someone you care about or knew commits suicide. The before shots and flashbacks are blasted with warm tones and orange whereas the after scenes are cold and blue. This dynamic shows just how much life changed for everyone after Hannah killed herself. The characters, Clay especially, felt Hannah's death in such a way that it caused Clay to act out and hear things.
While I couldn't finish the entire series, it is important that our generation learns what it's about and the message it's trying to get across. This show is so important to raise awareness of suicide and depression without romanticizing it. It's also important because of the rawness of the show. It's unfiltered and portrays everything very accurately. However, if you have any issues with depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts, please think twice about watching this series since it is extremely triggering.
