13 Lessons Taught by the Simpsons Family

Since I can remember, my family and I have tuned in at 7pm every Sunday for a new episode of the Simpsons. We’ve gone through many phases of TV shows from Malcom in the Middle to Wayward Pines, but the Simpsons have always been our go to show. My dad has always joked that my brother and I were “educated by Disney” but I think he meant, “Educated by the Simpsons.” Whenever we needed to create a connection for school or life in general it was the Simpsons family we turned to first. I think every family has that one dysfunctional TV show to laugh and compare themselves to, as well as teach lasting life lessons.

Here are the 13 lessons the Simpsons Family has taught the world:

1. Sometimes "D'oh" just sums everything up.

2. Your past doesn't determine your future

"That's why pencils have erasers!" (S11E16)

3. Always give your all

"I can't promise I'll try, but I'll try to try." (S8E20)

4. There are times when food is the answer to all your problems

"If you need me, I'll be in the refrigerator." (S2E18)

5. ...Or the cause of them

"Loneliness and cheeseburgers are a dangerous mix." (S8E17)

6. But, food is also a great way to bring people together

"You don't win friends with salad." (S7E5)

7. Hold yourself and others accountable for their actions

"Well, I'm not calling you a liar but...I can't think of a way to finish that sentence." (S7E18)

8. A night in is always a good idea

"What's the point of going out? We're just gonna wind up back here anyway." (S7E14)

9. Not everyone deserves your time

“You go through life, you try to be nice to people, you struggle to resist the urge to punch em in the face, and for what?!” (S7E12)

10. Even when they're wrong, your parents are always right

" Boy, everyone is stupid except me.” (S4E3)

11. Cherish all the things your parents do for you, because one day you'll be taking care of them....

" Lisa, you’ve got the brains and talent to go as far as you want, and when you do I’ll be right there to borrow money.” (S8)

12. Live a life you're proud of and that the people important to you will remember.

" Everything lasts forever.” (S6E12)

13. But most importantly, all the answers to life can be found on the Simpsons

" When will I learn? The answer to life’s problems aren’t at the bottom of a bottle, they’re on TV!” (S4)

**This is dedicated to my crazy weird family I wouldn't trade for anything in the world.

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
