13 Things I Wish I Knew When I Turned Thirteen

13 Things I Wish I Knew When I Turned Thirteen

My little sister's 13th birthday is coming up and it made me think, "What can I give to her that will last more than a physical present?" Of course, I will still get her a birthday present (don't worry), but words have power and are some of the greatest gifts a person can give or receive. Here are thirteen things I wish I had been told (or listened to when I was told) when I turned thirteen.

1. It's okay to not be okay.

Remember, flowers grow in dirt.

2. When you feel something, really feel it.

Don't push down and bottle up your feelings. You were given them for a reason.

3. You are literally losing your mind- embrace it.

When you go through puberty, your brain's cells are literally dying and then being reborn. You are literally losing your mind and it is OK!

4. Your parents are not the enemy.

Of course, when I was 13, I was convinced my parents wanted my life to be miserable, but looking back as an adult, everything my parents did was for my well being. #blessthem

5. Friends come and go- don't lose your head over bad ones.

I had my fair share with rough friendships and there are times when unhealthy friendships need to be let go.

6. Get a mentor.

The two wise and Godly women who mentored me were life savers. The amount of wisdom, love and time they gave me was monumental and influential in my growing up endeavor.

7. Find a hobby and pour yourself in it.

There are many wonderful and enchanting things to do on this earth; do not waste your time on useless crap.

8. The party scene is not as glamorous as it seems.

End of story.

9. Education is much more important than the opinions of others.

Cherishing and taking care of the opportunity of education is worth so much more than some angsty (I know this isn't technically a word, but I am making it one.) teenager's opinion of you.

10. Money does not define worth.

No matter how much money a person has, they can still have either a heart of gold or a heart of stone. Decide which heart you want.

11. Life is too short to lie to important people in your life about important things in your life.

Once trust is broken, it is very hard to gain back. Believe me, I know.

12. When tragedy strikes, embrace your loved ones- don't run away.

Tragedy will strike, but you have people around you who love you. You are not meant to walk this life alone.

13. You are beloved.

You are loved more than you will ever know. Remember who you are, and whose you are. The God of the Universe died to save you because you are beloved.

And one to "grow-on"

Family is a bond between souls, not blood, and are always there for you when you need them. Don't be afraid to ask for help, a hug or some extra love when you need it.

We don't buy into these... just like how we don't buy our friends.

Being a part of any organization undoubtedly comes with the pitfalls of being grouped into negative stereotypes, and sororities are certainly no exception. Here are the top few things, that I find at least, are some of the most irritating misconceptions that find their way into numerous conversations...

8. "The whole philanthropy thing isn't real, right?"

Well all those fundraisers and marketing should would be a waste then wouldn't they?

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.
