On December 27, 2016 around 1:00 p.m., I received a notification on my phone that Star Wars star, Carrie Fisher, had passed. I immediately called my best friend to tell her, because Carrie had meant a lot to us. Most people know her as Princess (or General) Leia Organa, but she was more than just her character. Fisher was unabashedly herself, all the time. She was open about her mental illness and fought back against those who criticized her and others for aging. Carrie said the strangest things that were amazingly iconic. She was perhaps best known for her tweets, which were often cryptically spelled out in emojis and almost always guaranteed to make you laugh.
One of my heroes died, but the mark she made on this world will live on. People, young and old, will be able to draw on her for inspiration as time goes on. I wasn't sure what kind of article I wanted to write this week: would I write about why Carrie meant so much to me? How fans could push on after her death? What inspiration we can take from her in order to kick butt in 2017? Ultimately, I decided to collect some of my all time favorite Carrie Fisher tweets, because we all need a little laugh and a bit of inspiration as we start 2017.
1. That time she discussed all three of her feelings.
Not only does Carrie lay down the law about who can talk about her body, she gives us an iconic phrase. 2016 has, unfortunately, hurt all three of my feelings.
2. That time she created a meme.
Ever since she tweeted this, it has been a recurring joke for everyone. I have called my friends "my only ho" an uncountable amount of times.
3. That time she summed up our feelings about Trump.
I don't even like soda and I'd have to agree.
4. And that time she insulted him in a new way.
Of course, I'm not sure he's really an ogre. Does he even have layers? Real ogres have layers, like an onion. The only similarity Trump has to an onion is that he makes me cry.
5. Carrie never shied away from talking about her addiction.
She opened a dialogue about drug addiction through her sense of humor and openness about her struggles.
6. When she made a solid point.
Translation: "When you say someone is down to Earth, where are they down to Earth from? And once you've been spotted down there, can you go back to the up zone and who is up for it?"
7. All the times she was the best dog mom ever.
Gary is an emotional support dog who helped Fisher with her bipolar disorder and went everywhere with her. All you had to do was glance at his or Carrie's twitter to see how much the pair loved one another. I was worried about how he'd be doing after she passed, but luckily her daughter will be taking him in!
8. Of course, this iconic moment.
If I didn't try and keep my language more PG on Facebook, "g'nite fuck-o's" would be my sign off for every single thing I posted. I honestly love that and "cool sass factories" as well.
9. That time she pointed out how "crazy" finds us all.
Do we ever actually go crazy? Or does it always just find us?
10. When she spoke for many of us in one retweet.
There's two ways I view this. Carrie and I both would probably RT for Harrison Ford's ass over anything. We'd also probably RT anything over Donald Trump...
11. Another iconic retweet.
I couldn't agree more when she retweeted it, and honestly I'm still sick of waiting around.
12. When she embodied the attitude I'm taking into 2017
I mean, honestly. With everything the world went through this year, how can I not embody Carrie Fisher in this tweet?
13. And last, when she gave us a beautiful reminder.
Something I'll remember as I mourn both Carrie and her beautiful mother.
All tweets are screenshotted directly from Carrie's twitter unless linked to another source.
It wasn't just Carrie's tweets that were iconic. It was the way she talked about mental illness and addiction in interviews. It was everything about her. I just selected some of my personal favorite moments that embodied Carrie's iconic online presence. If you too were a fan of Carrie's, please feel free to comment your favorite Carrie moments, either from twitter or interviews that you have seen!
And don't forget, despite what the news said, Carrie had one idea for how she would go and that's the story we're sticking to. Rest in peace, Space Mom. Thank you for providing us with a way to smile because you knew we would be broken when you finally departed this world:
