October is finally here, guys. Our patience has finally paid off.
And with October comes lots of great things: candy corn, jack-o-lanterns and most importantly… scary movies.
If you’re not sure which Halloween movies to break out this year, let me be of assistance to you.
Here are some “must watch” Halloween movies before October 31 (or really whenever you want to, because who cares what society thinks?).
1. Hocus Pocus
Probably not the scariest movie on this list, but very likely the most iconic. Singing witch sisters? A talking cat? Virgins lighting candles? It really can’t get much better.
2. Scream (1-4)
Because who doesn’t love a self-aware horror movie? Not to mention ghost-face is actually pretty darn creepy and I find myself jumping in my seat no matter how many times I’ve seen them.
3. Halloweentown (1-3)
Now before you say these movies aren’t scary, try watching them as a 5-year-old child. Definitely gave me a few scares. Also, Halloweentown should be on every list ever. ALSO, note the lack of the 4th one.
4. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
First of all, it’s Johnny Depp’s breakout role, so seeing him in the 80’s alone enough to watch this. And secondly, this ALWAYS makes me terrified to go to sleep at night. The idea of Freddy Krueger being able to follow you back from your dreams… no thank you!
5. Sleepy Hollow
Once again, a young Johnny Depp. Also, the story of the headless horseman is one classic and scary enough to give you quite a few chills while watching.
6. Friday the 13th
Because Jason is one scary guy and that hockey mask will never not freak me out.
7. IT
Pennywise: the original terrifying clown luring children down into drains. He will never not terrify me.
8. Harry Potter
All of them. And let’s be honest, it’s because you can watch Harry Potter for any holiday. Literally any of them.
9. The Conjuring
This new(ish) horror movie left me sleeping with a lamp on for several days after initially watching it. Its got all the elements of a good horror movie with good acting to boot.
10. Insidious (1-3)
Because apparently Patrick Wilson is the new Johnny Depp and this trilogy of movies scared me senseless.
11. The Nightmare Before Christmas
This movie is actually pretty darn creepy. AND it’s got the song “This is Halloween” in it. A must watch.
12. The Strangers
Everyone’s worst nightmares come to fruition. One of the scariest senseless movies I’ve ever seen.
13. Halloween
All 5 million of them. Because Michael Meyer’s slow walk is the reason that Halloween exists. And because no matter how fast you run or how many times you kill him, he just keeps coming back for more. The most relevant, terrifying Halloween movies of all time.
So this Halloween, grab your friends, your boyfriend/girlfriend, carve some pumpkins, eat a ridiculous amount of candy corn and watch every movie on this list. If you dare.
