Every now and then, us girls go through a rough break-up or just a romantic falling out of some sort. Your family offers comforting advice and so do your friends, but sometimes you need something else. You need an upbeat, empowering anthem to get your mood up. You need music. Artists, old and new, are always writing catchy, motivating songs to fix heartbreak. I have put together a list of 13 hits that are sure to lift your hopeless romantic feelings.
1. Blow Me (One Last Kiss)
P!nk's 2012 hit single off her sixth studio album proved to be a tough-girl anthem. Between the lines "I think I've finally had enough/I think I maybe think too much/I think this might be it for us" listeners can relate to P!nk's feeling of being fed up and tired of a relationship. She expresses her hopelessness for a future: "I won't miss all of the fighting/That we always did/Take it in/I mean what I say when I say there is nothing left." Turn the volume up and shout along with P!nk as you both sing away the pain.
2. I Can Do Better
Known for her grungy, pop-rock music, Avril Lavigne wrote "I can do better" for her third studio album, "The Best Damn Thing." Lavigne rants about her new hate for the song's subject and how she can find someone better. She expresses her need for something more in a relationship that she obviously is not getting. Lavigne sings "I'm better off without you anyway/I thought it would be hard but I'm okay/I don't need you if you're gonna be that way/'Cause with me, it's all or nothing." The entire song is upbeat and fun; the perfect song every girl needs to bring her spirits back up.
3. Same Old Love
The second single from Selena Gomez's new album, "Revival," has a hint of Justin Bieber in it. By that, I mean listeners can plainly understand he is the inspiration of Gomez's rant about old love tearing her up. Gomez sings, "Take away your things and go/You can't take back what you said, I know/I've heard it all before, at least a million times/I'm not one to forget, you know." Those long, shaky relationships can have you feeling what she is. You know how it goes; the same fights, the same making up, the same everything. Well, Sel is sick of it, and you should be too.
4. I Look So Good (Without You)
Jessie James sings about the plus side of being dumped in her "soft" break up song. Without your now ex-boyfriend, James says your skin will be clearer, and smile wider. She sings "I look so good without you/Got me a new hairdo/Looking fresh and brand new/Since you said that were through." Sing along and discover the side of you being you, without anyone else in your life.
5. Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)
Released in 2011, Kelly Clarkson did not hold back in her second single off her fifth album. The song's mix of pop, rock, and dance is a pick-me-up anthem for girls all over. Clarkson sings, "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger/Stand a little taller/Doesn't mean I'm lonely when I'm alone." This song is perfect for the popular expression; "I don't need no man," to put it in slang terms. The upbeat chorus has me feeling more powerful and you should too.
6. Really Don't Care
Demi Lovato's 2014 hit single is a major dancing song. Starting off with a powering beat, Lovato sings, "You wanna play, you wanna stay you wanna have it all." What does this mean? This song is directed towards any boy who does not want to commit, and would rather mess around with multiple girls than stay true to one. I'm sure we can all relate. Lovato sings the truth through her chorus: "But even if the stars and moon collide/I never want you back into my life/You can take your words and all your lies/Oh, oh, oh! I really don't care." And that is right ladies, we really don't care.
7. Picture to Burn
A bit of a throwback, Taylor Swift's "Picture to Burn" remains one of my favorite songs. The 2008 single centers around a selfish ex-fling that Swift is so ready to get over. She sings, "State the obvious/I didn't get my perfect fantasy/I realize you love yourself more than you could ever love me.'' Swift tells the truth; when does something ever actually work out the way we want? And an even bigger truth, she acknowledges the fact that us girls will at times be called "obsessive and crazy." Drawing on girl empowerment, Swift is "planning [her] revenge." She is not crying about her lost love, she is burning the memories.
8. Take A Bow
Rihanna's 2008 R&B ballad revolves around the term we are all familiar with: being "fake." She shames the boy who lied to her and claims he "put on quite a show." Rihanna is not accepting any apologies. She sings, "Don't tell me you're sorry cause you're not/Baby when I know you're only sorry you got caught." Cheaters have no room to be forgiven and Rihanna is acknowledging his skill for lying: "And the award for the best liar goes to you/For makin' me believe/That you could be/Faithful to me." Although not an upbeat tune, the song's raw breakdown is sure to be relatable.
9. Goodbye
Getting over the ex and making changes in your life? Kristinia DeBarge's twist on Steam's "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye" is an upbeat dance tempo that is sure to have you over him in no time. DeBarge expresses her disgust in a boy who doesn't have his life together and is slowing her own life down. She sings, "Am I supposed to put my life on hold/Because you don't know how to act/And you don't know where your life is going." Being single and successful is a much bigger accomplishment than dating a loser. Debarge's chorus reads, "I'm so over it, I've been there and back/Changed all my numbers and just in case you're wondering/I got that new/I'm a single girl swag." She is not looking back and neither should you.
10. Ghost
British recording artist Ella Henderson made her 2014 debut with her first single, "Ghost." As each relationship goes, both partners get a little crazy. In the fallout of hers, Henderson "had to go through hell to prove [she's] not insane." She claims the ghost of her ex keeps haunting her and reminding her of the horrible relationship. This is what seeing your former loved one on campus can feel like. The upbeat, dark tone of the song is empowering, and makes me a little angry listening to it. Anger is good though, it keeps us strong. I think that is what Henderson was going for.
11. Afterlife
Broken relationships often feel like the world is ending to some of us. Ingrid Michaelson touches upon this feeling in her uplifting, harmonious single. Her first two lines, "When the world is breaking down around you/Taking everything that you know," open a mind of confusion and frustration. As the chorus comes around, I can't help but feel hopeful and happy. Michelson sings that "We are going to be alright" and "We got we always got the fight in us." The world doesn't end when a relationship does, we always can get back up.
12. Fighter
Christina Aguilera's 2002 hit is feisty, fiery, and downright empowering. Starting off with Aguilera's spoken word, the song jumps into a hard beat that makes you feel like a bada$$ listening to it. The chorus goes, "Makes me that much stronger/Makes me work a little bit harder/It makes me that much wiser/So thanks for making me a fighter." She finds the plus side in being cheated on - strength. She's "had enough" and won't accept being the blame. Just as we all should.
13. Miss Movin' On
Last, but certainly not least, is a definition girl empowerment song. As you can tell by the title, Fifth Harmony did not hold back. They sing, "I'm breakin' down/Gonna start from scratch/Shake it off like an etch-a-sketch/My lips are saying goodbye/My eyes are finally dry." What is better than singing along to a group of girls who are perfectly reflecting your feelings? This pop song is one to belt out in the car, letting everyone know that you are moving on. Fifth Harmony sings about being no longer afraid and growing stronger.; what we all should aim for when getting over someone.
