Forty-three years ago today, Billie Jean King made history by beating star tennis player and blatant misogynist Bobby Riggs in the much anticipated "Battle of the Sexes" tennis match. Bobby Riggs spent the preceding months taunting King and all female athletes, saying things like "I’ll tell you why I’ll win. She’s a woman and they don’t have the emotional stability," and "women belong in the bedroom and kitchen, in that order." Of course, King went on to easily win the match in front of 30,492 spectators and a televised audience of about 50 million. This crucial victory (along with the passage of Title IX a year prior) created an upsurge in women's sports at the time.

Besides this famous match, Billie Jean King's athletic accomplishments include: thirty-nine Grand Slam titles, being the first female athlete to make $100,000 in one year, a record 20 championships at Wimbleton, the number one ranking for the world's best female tennis players, and more. But what she did off the court was just as incredible and far more influential. Much like Colin Kaepernick today, Billie Jean King used her athletic fame to promote equality and justice. As one of the first openly gay female athletes, she became an advocate for LGBT and women's rights. Here are thirteen quotes that highlight her activism and her struggle:

1. "It's just really important that we start celebrating our differences. Let's start tolerating first, but then we need to celebrate our differences."

2. "No one changes the world who isn't obsessed."

3. "The main thing is to care. Care very hard, even if it is only a game you are playing."

5. "I wanted to use sports for social change."

6. "Ever since that day when I was 11 years old, and I wasn't allowed in a photo because I wasn't wearing a tennis skirt, I knew that I wanted to change the sport."

7. "That is where the power, opportunity, and choice come from-when you have money. Money equals opportunity. There is no question."

9. "I didn't really care if I had a coach that much, me personally, because I was brought up to think for myself."

10. "I think it's impossible to judge whether another person should come out. You just hope they will on their own time and their own terms."

12. "I used to be told if I talked about my sexuality in any way that we wouldn't have a tennis tour."

13. "Women get the attention when we get into the men's arena, and that's sad."

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!
