Giving a compliment is like hugging people with your words. Some people compliment those around them on a frequent basis, while others prefer to share kind words only on occasion. Unfortunately compliments are a dying custom, thanks to the compliment's evil twin brother, insults. In a world often filled with prejudice and slander, spreading positivity and compassion is incredibly important. I think it's high time humanity took a stand.

One way to make a difference is by speaking words of encouragement that empower the people around you. Compliments on cute outfits and the latest accessories can temporarily brighten someone's day, but those only go so far. While consulting a M.M.S. graduate student who holds a B.S. in psychology, it was suggested that compliments of a superficial nature tend to have less of a lasting impact on a person than compliments regarding character strengths.

Here are 12 compliments that don't involve physical appearance:

1. You matter.

It's difficult to compliment someone when they feel unimportant. Maybe this one will help.

2. I love you.

What’s better than hearing your friends, family members, and significant other tell you this?Nothing. Literally nothing.

3. You’re unique.

Some people may choose to take this one as an insult but I believe it also holds a positive connotation. Non-conformism is something to be applauded in today's homogenous society.

4. Your laugh brightens the room!

Many people, including myself, are self-conscious about their laugh. Here’s one way to cheer up that friend who might be feeling a little nervous about their giggle.

5. God took extra time making you.

This one speaks for itself.

6. You make me want to be a better person.

Surround yourself with people who encourage you on your journey to self-improvement.

7. Your hard work is admirable.

Hard work is not to be talked about lightly. Whether it be a countless number of hours spent in the office or the class room, people love for their hard work to be recognized.

8. I’m proud of you.

I am proud of my family and friends, not for their accomplishments, but for who they are.

9. You have a kind heart.

Gentle hearts are rare and invaluable in today's modern society.

10. Where would I be without you?

We frequently depend on those around us for support. Tell a friend, family member, or significant other that you value their support. It will help them feel needed and appreciated.

11. Wow, I never would've thought of that!

Everyone loves to have their ideas and suggestions reaffirmed. People are quick to criticize themselves for a lack of creativity. Try sharing the love with this one the next time you’re working on a school project or discussing important business matters at a conference.

12. You are intelligent.

Everyone likes to be told they’re smart, but intelligent takes “smart” one step further. It suggests that someone is born bright, and that their intellect is not dependent upon their achievement. This is a compliment that should not be given lightly.

So the next time you think about complimenting your friend on that gorgeous designer purse (guilty), why not take it one step further? Sometimes non-materialistic words of encouragement are what truly make a person feel appreciated for who they are.

Sorority
Rebekah Lee

I remember my freshman year oh so well. I remember feeling terrified the night before orientation. The one thing that I dreaded the most was not the new people, the new environment, or even the academic pressure. I was dreading having to talk to sorority girls about Recruitment. I remember cutting off and avoiding any Rho Gamma/Panhellenic Officer that came my way during First Week. I looked at them like they had asked me to cut my arm off whenever they asked me if I wanted to rush. To be honest, I did not even know what rush was, but I knew that I did NOT want to be a part of it. To me, it was dumb. It was a waste of money. It was a waste of my time.

And guess what? I did not rush my freshman year. I spent the first half of my freshman year isolating myself from everyone on campus. I spent all of my time in the library, and then (since I was a commuter) went back home once my work was finished.

Tiana would no doubt be disappointed in the food our cafeteria has to offer.

And hopefully she would cook for everyone in her dorm.

She definitley would not take any 8:00 am classes because she would be up late baking and cleaning up the communal kitchen that are available in every dorm.
