An Open Letter To My Spring Semester Self

The fall semester was good, but I'm ready for the spring semester to begin.

Dear self,

The fall semester went pretty well for you, didn’t it? You are expected to make Dean’s List-- meaning that you did pretty well in your classes. You had some relationships end, both friendships and romantic, but you started some new ones. You have learned a lot this past semester and it’s time to take what you have learned this fall and carry it over to the spring.

You have earned a lot of leadership positions. In your frat, it's time to take on two executive board roles and one of those positions will be on voting exec. It’s going to be a lot to juggle but if you stay on top of everything you have to do, then you will definitely succeed. What you were given was a great honor, so hopefully you can give back to everything your frat has given you.

Your longest romantic relationship has ended. You learned a lot from this person and you have learned a lot from how to handle a relationship that ends. Everything happens for a reason and life had this end in plan for you. Sometimes things have to end for something better in your life to happen.

Spring semester-- it's your time for these better things to happen. You can go out and meet new people and have fun.

Now that you will be turning 20-years-old the first week of spring semester, you are finally leaving the teenage years-- so it is time to see what these years have in store for you. A new semester, a new year and a new decade. It’s time for new things in your life and I cannot wait to see what 2017 has in store for you.

You are also starting to get more into your major classes. It’s your fourth semester at Penn State. It’s almost time for you to finish your entrance-to-major requirements. Just continue working hard and see if you can make Dean’s List for the third semester in a row. Grades are super important to you, especially because you’re going to be a teacher one day, so stay on top of your work and keep working hard. Try for a 4.0. Set goals and work towards them each and every day.

You should also start going to the gym and not just because you are gaining some weight, but because you will be a healthier individual. You are such a picky eater, but try and eat better as well. If you go to the gym on a schedule, you will be more likely to continue going to the gym, so try doing it for yourself and stick to it. Try to stop eating when you are bored and try eating three good meals a day, instead of just eating when you are hungry. You will be a much happier and healthier individual.

The spring semester should have many wonderful things in store for you. Try and stay happy. Stay in contact with your friends and family members. Work hard in school and work hard in the gym. Remember to think about yourself sometimes, too. Don’t forget about things that will make you happy. Your happiness is important as well.

It’s a new year and a new you, so try and do things that will better yourself. I hope the spring semester is a wonderful semester for you and starts off a wonderful year!

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
