12 New Year’s Resolutions That Are More Than A ‘New You’.

A new year is a new beginning. A clean slate, a fresh start to do anything your heart wishes. Most years, people tend to share the same resolutions. Those including eating healthier, exercising more often, being more productive, etc. Whether you possess these goals or anything in between, if you stick by them all throughout the year, I applaud you tremendously. Living a healthy lifestyle is challenging enough and carrying out a big new year’s resolution all year long is something many fall behind on. Here are twelve resolutions that are not huge or overwhelming and you may even find easier to stick with.

1. Be kinder.

Whether it is to the person making your morning coffee or your mail carrier. Smile when you see others, they are living their lives and doing their jobs, just like you. Always be kind. (Even to yourself.)

2. Bring in your neighbor’s garbage cans.

Pick up is usually just twice a week and you’re already out there. Walking your neighbor's trash can up to their house is a simple way to give a helping hand to those around you.

3. Mail loved one’s letters once in a while.

Who doesn’t get over-joyed when receiving mail? Especially when it is not a bill. A hand written card goes a long way and never fails to spread a smile on someone’s face.

4. Drink more water.

Water is so essential to life. The benefits of drinking plenty are endless. Drink up!

5. Face your fears.

The phrase “do not be afraid” is written in the bible 365 times. That is a daily reminder from God to live every day being fearless.

6. Donate.

Whether you donate clothes you no longer wear, toys that just sit on a shelf, books you have read, cookies to a bake sale, your blood, your hair, your money or your time, donate! It will make you feel good and the person receiving even better.

7. Read.

Reading does, in fact, make you smarter. The more words you read, the more words you know. The is no downside to reading.

8. Take deep breaths.

You are only one person. It is important to remember you must live YOUR life for YOU. Do more of what makes YOU happy.

9. Say thank you more often.

I have always felt it is utterly important to express gratitude whenever possible. Letting somebody know they are meaningful to you, is essential.

10. Sit up straight.

Studies have shown that when you are sitting or standing with exceptional posture, you work more effectively and efficiently.

11. Think happy thoughts.

Thinking happy thoughts is truly life changing. When you are in a good mood, write yourself a positive note. So if you find yourself in a bad mood or upset, you have that uplifting message to read.

12. Take vitamins.

Taking vitamins is a simply way to increase your health. There is a myriad of types of vitamins to choose from. Adding vitamin intake to your daily routine is easy and beneficial to your being.

Happy 2017!!!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
