They happen to all of us, and sometimes, regardless of whether we want them to or not, we let them get the best of us. So, here's a few things you can do to turn a bad day into a good one.
1. Breathe
You only have a bad day if you let yourself have a bad day. So take a deep breath and let it go. Now, I know that's easier said than done, but your attitude is the key. A positive mindset = a positive life.
2. Count Your Blessings (Literally)
Take out a sheet of paper or just mentally create a list in your head of ten (or more) things that you are thankful for. These can be family, friends, your health, and even your dog. Got it? Good, now keep it with you, or at the very least remember it. Any time you feel frustrated or upset concentrate on those things and how they contribute to your happiness.
3. Smile
It's actually been scientifically proven that smiling can improve your mood, even if you're just faking it! Besides, you have a wonderful set of pearly whites, so why not show them off to the world. Plus your smile may create a domino effect of other smiles.
4. Sweat it out
Even if you don't like to work out, you can't ignore the fact that it ultimately makes you feel good right after. That's mainly because working out releases endorphins that make you happy. Even better? Working out is not just limited to lifting weights or running miles on the treadmill. You can literally do anything. The more you enjoy it, the better.
5. Volunteer
No matter how bad off you may think you are, trust me when I say there is always someone who has it worse. So instead of sulking around, transform your negative energy into something positive. Go out and make a difference for someone else. It might just help you out too.
6. Call your best friend
Whether it's the familiar sound of their voice, a listening ear, or a really bad joke, your best friend will always have you back and will no doubt cheer you up on days where you just feel like the world is plotting against you.
7. Go easy on yourself
So you didn't do so hot on that exam. Or maybe you accidentally (or intentionally) slept through that important lecture. Oh well. While you should never totally give up or skip class or what have you, realize that it's okay to make mistakes every once in a while. We're not perfect. Sometimes we fail, and that's okay. Failure of any kins is just an opportunity to learn and grow.
8. Make a playlist of your favorite songs
Music is definitely a great way to boost your mood, especially when it's something you like. Whether it's a specific genre, song, or artist, pack your playlist with upbeat songs guaranteed to turn your day around. Listen to it while you walk to and from class, blast it in your room, and even blare it from the speakers of you car.
9. Pet a furry friend
Pets are supposed to make our lives better, right? They love us unconditionally, and are just so darn cute that they can bring a smile to just about anyone's face. Away from home or don't have a pet? Volunteer at your local animal shelter. Not only will you be donating your time to help others, but you also get to spend time with adorable animals who will no doubt love the extra attention almost as much as you love giving it.
10. Get outdoors (if you can)
Fresh air? Sunshine? Vitamin D? All the ingredients you need to turn a bad day into a good one. With so many different options, there's no excuse for not taking advantage of all the nature has to offer. Go for a walk, run, swim, sled, snowboard, you name it. Just get outside.
11. Take a break from social media
Social media can sometimes do us more harm than good. Every now and then, it's a good idea to just put down your phone and take a break from posting, tweeting, and scrolling. Regardless of how "real" it feels, your life goes way beyond a tiny screen and keyboard, so actually go out and live it. Forget about the likes and instead focus on what matters most to you instead.
12. Do something you love
Everyone has a passion. Haven't found yours yet? Keep looking. When you find it, focus on it. When you're doing something you love, you tend to focus less on the negatives and more on the positives.
