12 Ways To Be Your Own Valentine

As a single, I used to dread Valentine's Day. The weeks leading up, the stores are filled with pink, red, hearts, and chocolate. I see all of these couples, and it makes me aware of just how single I am. However, Valentine's Day is about love -- all love, not just relationships. To the single people out there, Happy Single's Awareness Day! Being single is no excuse not to like this day. Use a few or all of these ways to enjoy Valentine's Day.

1. Buy some chocolate.

Who says you need a significant other to buy you a box of chocolates? Chocolate is delicious no matter who it is from.

2. Order a heart shaped pizza.

What says love more than greasy cheese and pepperoni in the shape of a heart? My college freshman roommate and I shared a heart shaped pizza and ate with no manners while watching Netflix. We had a great time, and didn’t need boyfriends to brighten the mood.

3. Treat yourself with something nice.

Happy Valentine’s Day to me! This is a perfect opportunity to treat yourself with something nice. This year, I ordered a killer pair of heels and a purse. Guys, enjoy a new watch, a bottle of cologne, or whatever suits your fancy.

4. Snuggle with a pet.

Don't stress about being single! Petting an animal reduces stress. Don't have a pet? Visit your local animal store or shelter.

5. Wine.

Is there anything else to say?

6. Enjoy a movie.

Comedy, horror, thriller, or action are the best ways to go. Pop a bowl of popcorn. Try to stay away from romance. Have a good laugh or scare.

7. Pamper yourself.

Sit back and relax. Enjoy a nice hot bath with another glass of wine (or sparkling grape juice). Bath bombs or a bubble bath, and a candle sets the mood just right.

8. Hug a body pillow.

The next closest thing to a boyfriend’s or girlfriend's embrace is that of a large comfy pillow. My body pillow, Fernando, has never failed as my cuddle buddy.

9. Dress nicely.

The only person you need to impress is yourself. You don’t need a man or woman to look nice for. Looking your best will make you feel good. (Unless you’re staying in, then nothing is sexier than sweatpants).

10. Give your friends Valentines.

It’s hard to top putting a smile on the faces of people you care about. You don’t have to purchase anything extravagant, even those nostalgic Valentine’s that come with a lollipop or a small box of chocolates.

11. Spend time with someone you love.

This doesn’t mean a romantic lover. Valentine’s Day is the day of love; it isn’t exclusive to romantic relationships. Spend time with people you love. We all have single friends. Have a good girl's or guy's night. Celebrate being single together.

12. Love Yourself.

The best love is the love for yourself. Loving yourself means you’re happy being single. This is also being secure in knowing that you will have a "somebody” on the day of love in the future. In the meantime, be happy. Being content with being single is better than being insecure in any relationship. It also allows you to be the happiest in a future relationship, since you do not need to depend on another person for happiness.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
