Even if you travel or move away from the tiny Mid-Atlantic state so many people call home, there are some things that will always be ingrained in you. Here are a few things most Marylanders know and love about themselves.

1. You always listen for the loud “O” in the National Anthem.

Whether you’re at Camden Yards or a local high school game, the “O” in “O say can you see” will, without a doubt, be yelled in support of the Orioles.

2. Your table has salt, pepper, and Old Bay at all times.

People in Maryland put Old Bay on everything. Besides the obvious choices (like crabs) some people put it on potatoes, popcorn, and eggs.

3. You love crab chips.

There’s just something about them. They taste incredible and you can get them only in select states. In Maryland, you can find them at pretty much every grocery store.

4. You love Ocean City.

A part of you does at least. Even if you didn’t grow up vacationing there, there’s something about the place that is uniquely Maryland. Walking down the boardwalk, you never miss all the favorites: Thrashers, Fisher’s Popcorn, and Candy Kitchen.

5. You either have a boat or know someone with a boat.

Boating is a favorite activity for Marylanders in the summer months. The season kicks off with the Blue Angels in May, followed quickly by Memorial Day. Some people like to just cruise while others opt for wakeboarding, wakesurfing, or water skiing.

6. You know what a snowball is.

It is not called a snowcone. When people look at you funny after you say snowball, tell them they were invented in Baltimore. Local favorites include, of course, egg custard and skylite. Stands dot the streets during the summer to sell them, topping the ice with marshmallow. Nothing beats a refreshing Maryland snowball.

7. You pronounce Maryland as “Marilyn”.

Even if you don’t do it, your parents or grandparents probably do if they are from the area. The Baltimore accent can get pretty heavy, and you might catch yourself doing it depending on where in Maryland you’re from.

8. You have immense pride in the Maryland state flag.

You probably don’t know why. But people from Maryland plaster their state flag everywhere. You see shorts, sweatshirts, and scarves with the pattern. There are countless bumper stickers, keychains, and even lanyards with the flag.

9. Orioles’ games aren’t complete without a stop at Boog’s BBQ.

If you go to Camden Yards, you have to stop at Boog’s. They have the best barbeque. And, there’s something about eating food like that at a baseball game that just feels right.

10. You love spring because of the Cherry Blossoms.

Even though it drives tourists into the area (especially into DC), you can’t help but play tourist yourself and get excited over them. Not only are they beautiful, but it means summer is on its way.

11. You know that Maryland has it all: mountains, beaches, rivers, lakes, and farmland.

Some people may find it strange that to get to the beach you have to drive through farmland (most notably, cornfields) but that’s just part of Maryland’s charm. We have everything from quint riverside towns like St. Michael’s, St. Mary’s and Annapolis to big cities like Baltimore and DC. But, we also have mountains in Western Maryland as well as a lake.

12. You probably love the water.

Maryland has over 7,700 miles of coastline. How can you not love the water? It’s everywhere.

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter

I've been in college for four years now. I spent half my time as a commuter and half as a resident so I've experienced both sides of the housing spectrum. One thing I've learned comparing the two is that my struggles as a commuter far outweigh anything I went through while living on campus. Commuters have to deal with the problems school brings along with a slew of other issues; I've filled up my gas tank in the worst kind of weather conditions and napped in random places in public more times than I'm proud to say of. This is a list of some of the most challenging aspects of being a commuter.
