12 Ways To Make Your Own Sunshine

Today is actually the best day of your life.

12 Ways To Make Your Own Sunshine

1) Compliment a stranger

I’m not entirely sure why, but for whatever reason telling someone you’ve never met before how good their hair looks or why you love their shoes makes you feel even better than they do.

2) Use your kitchen

Bake, cook, microwave, clean, spill things, whatever it is that you do best in the kitchen, do it. Preferably while listening (and dancing) to Wayne Newton or Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.

3) Spin in a circle

Throw your head back, stretch out your arms, and spin around like an oversized toddler. It’s exhilarating and freeing, and makes you feel like the desired someone in a music video, so that’s pretty cool.

4) Dance in public

I mean that. I don’t care if your “public” is the supermarket by yourself or a concert with a hundred other dancers, just do it. You’ll feel amazing, you’ll look ridiculous, and you’ll be living for you. (You should also probably dance not in public too. In fact, dance everywhere. Don’t stop til you get enough)

5) Call your mom

Or dad, grandma, grandpa, best friend, aunt, uncle, whomever. I don’t care. Get on the phone with some random loved one with whom you haven’t spoken in a while, and tell them the coolest thing you saw that day. Or tell them a joke. Or just remind them that you love them. Whatever you say, it’ll make you (and the recipient of the call), feel good.

6) Count your blessings and your toes

Think about everything in your life that’s something to be thankful for. Then go back and think of more things. Write them down, say them aloud, or just think of them. It doesn’t really matter, just try to list as many as you can.

7) Put a flower in your hair

Am I the only person that feels like an unstoppable force of nature whenever I have actual pieces of nature on my head? Join me, fellow flower children in the revolution of awesomeness.

8) Read a book

It doesn’t have to be a long, fancy novel. I mean it can be, that’s awesome, but it can be a comic book, or maybe one of your favorites from your childhood, or the textbook of the subject in which you have the most interest. It doesn’t really matter, as long as what you’re reading brings you some sort of joy.

9) Listen to some funky music

I really mean that specific genre of music. Look on youtube or spotify, find a playlist, and lay down the boogie and play that funky music (til you die). If that doesn’t put you in a good mood, then nothing will.

10) “Ice skate” on your floor

Fluffy socks recommended, but not necessary.

11) Paint your nails

Or draw fake tattoos on your arms. Attack an old pair of sneakers with sharpies. Mix food coloring in your pancake batter. It doesn’t matter how you do it, but find a way to color your life today.

12) Smile!

It’s so simple, but it does so much. Smile at everyone you see, be it your friend, stranger, or grumpy old neighbor, it really doesn’t matter. You’ll feel good, they’ll feel good, we’ll all feel good.

Of course, if all else fails, there's always pizza.

Have an amazing day, and don't forget how spectacular you are, you beautiful golden sunshine you.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
