Many people are unaware of just how many holidays are celebrated in America.

Not many people are aware of the multitude of holidays that are celebrated on nearly a daily basis. Since 2017 has recently begun, now is a good time to make yourself aware of future possible celebrations! Here is a list I've compiled of some holidays I found interesting - and some of which I had previously never heard of.

1. Croissant Day (1/30/17)

Yes, this is a day entirely dedicated to the the pastry that originated in Austria (then traveled to France.) Many restaurants observe this holiday, so make sure to stop by a Starbucks and get a discount on your croissant on January 30th!

2. Work Naked Day (2/1/17)

The name of this holiday, which was created by author Lisa Kanare, may lead you to believe it is about going to work without clothing; however, it is actually intended to have you work from the comfort of your home - naked, if you'd prefer it that way. It is not hard to believe that people who work from home are happier and more productive rather than those who must go to work every day, so make sure to ask your boss if you could work from home on February 1st!

3. Puppy Day (3/23/17)

This is a day created by animal lover, Coleen Paige. The point of this day is to have people adopt dogs instead of buy them from places that may use puppy mills. If you were ever looking for an excuse to get a pet... consider March 23rd the perfect day.

4. DNA Day (4/25/17)

On this day in 1953, scientists James Watson, Francis Crick, and others published their discovery of the double helix structure of DNA. If you've ever been interested in learning a little more about the genetic makeup of your body, take this day to do so!

5. Dance Like a Chicken Day (5/14/17)

This day is devoted to the Birdie Song and its accompanying Chicken Dance. If you have children, it may be a fun idea to have a mini party for them - invite their friends and have a dance-off!

6. National Donut Day (6/2/17)

This is a day that many people know about, simply because most of us love donuts. Dunkin Donuts has a tendency to give out a free donut to customers on this day, which is a great excuse to cheat on your diet this one day out of the year.

7. Compliment Your Mirror Day (7/3/17)

Although the name of this holiday may make it seem like you should talk to an inanimate object, the actual point is to show yourself some love and appreciation. July 3rd is a day to look at yourself in the mirror and give yourself a few kind words.

8. Be An Angel Day (8/22/17)

This holiday could be linked to certain religions, but the actual purpose is simply to be kind to those in need. This day (and every day) is a great opportunity to give back to your community, volunteer, or just lend a helping hand to someone who needs it.

9. Cheese Pizza Day (9/5/17)

One of the tastiest days of the year, September 5th, pays homage to the original cheese pizza that we all know and love. Use this day to maybe try your skills in the kitchen to make your own pie, or go to your favorite pizza restaurant to have a slice (or 5.)

10. Frappé Day (10/7/17)

This delicious drink, made with ice, milk, and coffee, has its very own holiday! Make sure to stop by your favorite coffee shop to buy yourself one of these frozen drinks, or maybe even try your hand at making one.

11. Buy Nothing Day (11/24/17)

The day after Thanksgiving, typically known as Black Friday, is also considered to be "Buy Nothing Day" to some people. This is a day that stands up against consumerism. If you're not feeling up to spending hundreds of dollars on Black Friday, take a stab at celebrating this holiday!

12. Ugly Sweater Day (12/19/17)

Most people tend to wear their ugly Christmas sweaters closer to Christmas itself - but the truth is, the holiday dedicated to these sweaters is on the 19th of Christmas! This day gives you an extra opportunity to wear the sweater that probably won't be worn again until next Christmas.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
