12 Truths About Kids

This weekend, I volunteered at Kid's Day, a community day here at Tufts University. If you're like me and you do a lot of mentoring programs with kids or have worked at a summer camp or have younger siblings, then you probably have witnessed these truths in action. Without further ado, here are a few things that are true about all kids.

1. If there is a hill, kids will always want to roll down it.

And they will likely want to roll down it more than once.

2. They can never resist a race.

Pro tip: This is a great trick to use if they are dawdling and walking slowly.

3. They do not like carrying things.

Although they do like being carried for piggyback rides.

4. When they get excited they forget their inside voice.

Oftentimes, they get excited before they are talking about something that they know a lot about, which brings us to...

5. Kids are really smart.

Wise words from Kid President. (If you want to be inspired watch his speech.)

If you find their favorite topic—like what they want to be when they grow up, they will give you a very profound answer and they will tell you random facts that you never knew.

6. The first law of physics does not apply to them.

For those who don't remember their high school physics class (don't worry, I looked this up on Wikipedia too), the first law of physics is: An object at rest tends to stay at rest unless an external force is applied to them.

7. The best place for them to go exploring is outside.

If kids are every misbehaving, it's probably because they have been inside for too long. Going outside gives kids a fresh perspective to run around and do their own thing. A win-win for everybody.

8. If they get fall down or get hurt, they quickly shake it off.

Kids are basically indestructible.

9. They love snack time.

And will remind you at least once every hour that they are hungry.

10. Kids are very creative.

They often think of doing things in ways we never thought were possible. Sometimes you have to help them focus their creativity, other times you just got to let them explore.

11. They have the best laughs.

The kind that are infectious and just make you want to laugh along with them.

12. They never grow up.

I have a firm belief that we all are really just big kids inside.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
