12 Tips For Getting Through Junior Year
New World Wow

Junior year has a reputation as the most hellish year of high school, so I'm here to save the day and share my wisdom. Since I am just finishing up my junior year of high school, I deemed it fit to share some of my... observations. It's not as bad as it seems, but there are some things that you should definitely look out for. With that said, it's your last year before it's all college all the time, so have fun with it!

1. Challenge yourself -- REASONABLY.

It's supposed to be hard - but not daily-mental-breakdown hard.

2. Just go to bed.

Sleep is much better than staying up all night stressing over that assignment you should've done weeks ago.

3. Have a social life, but don't go too crazy.

Junior year tends to be the year that everyone "finds themselves"... be warned.

4. Get good grades!!

Seriously, I can't stress this enough. If you've been lazy all of high school, now's your chance to prove to colleges that you're capable of big things.

5. Make friends with your teachers.

Before you know it, you're going to have to ask for teacher recommendations. Be nice to them! I know it might be painful, but it'll be worth it.

6. Visit colleges.

You're not going to have time senior year and you're not going to want to do it over the summer when there aren't even students at the school. Just do it!

7. Take practice standardized tests - LOTS of them.

This is definitely the worst part about junior year. Studying for the SAT/ACT tests on top of all your other school work is a huge pain in the ass, but it WILL pay off - I promise.

8. Take classes you actually WANT to take.

This is the year that everyone will start asking you what you want to be when you grow up. Take a few classes you actually enjoy so you can go about answering that question without a mental breakdown.

9. Visit your counselor regularly.

School counselors rock. They know what's up and they're going to have to write a rec for you - stand out!

10. Focus on yourself.

Yeah, cute boys/girls are delightful distractions, and that mean girl who tried to steal your best friend makes you want to rip your hair out, but that's not the point of junior year - you are! Make junior year about accepting yourself and being the best you can be.

11. Do your homework.

Doing your homework - no matter how pointless the assignment - is the easiest way to boost your grades. Not doing your homework is the easiest way to bring them way lower than they should be. Do whatever you gotta do to get assignments in ON time.

12. End your toxic friendships once and for all.

We all have them, and it's time to let them go. Bad friendships can distract you from what's important and just make you feel like crap. This is the year to find YOUR people.

You got this!

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."
