I'm rarely a TV watcher — I'm usually spinning around in a revolving door, with "college" on one side and "work" on the other — but, this fall, I was completely OBSESSED with ABC's Conviction. The show stars Hayley Atwell as Hayes Morrison, a rather unconventional former first daughter. When faced with the choice of taking a job with a figure from her past, New York District Attorney Conner Wallace, or going to jail for cocaine possession — hurting her mother's Senate campaign in the process — the choice is easy. Sort of. On the surface, Hayes is an unlikely choice to head the new Conviction Integrity Unit but, as the show will reveal, her bravery, wit and almost off-color sense of humor make her the perfect fit for the role. With the CIU, Hayes gets the opportunity to put her intelligence to good use by reviewing court decisions in cases where there is credible suspicion of a wrongful or at least challenge-able conviction. As an added bonus, the new position gives her a shot at (maybe) turning things around with Conner, after things between them ended on bad terms, as well as attempt to patch her relationships with her distant but loving mother and her stern, overprotective older brother.
Sounds amazing, right? You can stream all the episodes to date, here.
My perhaps out of control obsession with this show has led me to one conclusion and one conclusion only: we are all basically Hayes Morrison at some point or another, and have done at least one if not all of these things. Don't believe me? Keep reading.
12. Used or attempted some lowkey highkey manipulation at some point.
She was unsuccessful, but that doesn't really matter, does it?
11. Called in some bestie backup when necessary.
"They said what?! Give me the phone!"10. Snuck out, caused trouble, made a mess of something, someone, or yourself.
Or, if you're a real over-achiever, you've done all of these things. Maybe even all at once. That being said...
9. Intentionally caused trouble.
Sometimes we all just need a little mischief in our lives. Come by it honestly, it'll go over a little better.
8. Had this reaction after Instagram lurking for an hour and accidentally liking something.
To be fair, you're not even really at fault. If you didn't have such amazing investigative skills that needed to be put to use (like Hayes) you wouldn't even be in this situation!
7. Needed to let off a little steam.
If you're over the age of 21 and can drink responsibly, some nights just need to be capped off with a little whiskey therapy. No shame there.6. Had to see through the BS and put someone in their place.
Really, though. With some people, you've just gotta be straight up.5. Needing to reassure your parents that you're a big kid now, and they shouldn't be worried when you stay up all night to write a paper for one class, only to sleep through all the others.
Riiiiiight. Well, you're working on it, at least. Next semester will be different. Better, even. Maybe. You hope.4. Lost faith in yourself and needed to be picked back up.
Even wise-cracking, pant-suit-wearing Hayes Morrison needs to be reminded of how badass she is. And sometimes, you do, too. There's nothing wrong with that!3. Been disappointed by someone you cared about.
It's one of the biggest letdowns there is. But at least you know the truth now, right?2. Come to grips with an undeniable but enlightening truth.
This is Hayes', but yours could also be that you cannot survive Mondays without coffee. Totally understandable.1. Just needed to eat.
When you're at the point of being hangry, you really aren't your best self. Food is always the priority. So, now that you're convinced that you, too, are Hayes Morrison, you're totally gonna watch the show, right? Great, I need new CIU-loving buddies. Don't forget to vote for Conviction for favorite new TV drama for the People's Choice Awards!
