Beau Taplin once said,
The hours between 12 am and 6 am have a funny habit of making you feel like you're either on top of the world, or under it.
As an eighteen-year-old girl, Taplin's words seem applicable to my daily life. We are all familiar with those late nights spent indefatigably contemplating our past, present, and future. For some of us, being up late and reflecting on the day's events is routine, while for others it happens less frequently. But either way, here are 12 things to remember, while your brain is refusing to rest at 12 AM...
1. That boy you used to be in love with isn't thinking about you right now. He's writing songs about his new lover.
Life goes on, and that's okay.
2. No matter how many poems you write, you'll never find the closure you seek in a list of metaphors.
The only way to truly find the answers that you are in search of is to live your life.
3. Dreaming about a change tonight isn't going to create a change.
Only tomorrow's actions can do that.
4. Your future can't be narrated within a night.
It's a long story composed of detailed chapters, and you have nothing but time. Sleep. Stop fretting. Create more rising action tomorrow.
5. Don't rush it.
Even if your hands held all the right pieces to build a castle of thought, daylight will catch up with you before the task is finished. And, the sunlight will steal the majesty away from your night time wonder.
6. Whispers from late night conversations mean nothing.
He is intoxicated by insomnia, and so are you. You'll both remember nothing of tonight in the morning. So, purge your body of every emotion gnawing at your restless heart.
7. Sadness is a part of life.
Just because you are crying now doesn't mean you will always be weak.
8. Joy is not a friend of time.
The adrenaline rush you feel from listening to your favorite jam is everything. Relive these four minutes each night. This might be the only period available in your daily schedule for feeling like you're invincible.
9. It's okay if you don't have the answers.
Because you will soon. Even if you're hurting at the moment. Any pain you feel will pass.
10. You can't establish world peace in an hour for your tomorrow.
Create an action plan after you have slumbered. Your mind will be much more adept at thinking.
11. Enjoy tomorrow when it arrives.
Feel the fresh morning air, forgetting about the glow of last night's full moon.
12. Always remember that you aren't defined by the ideas that swerve into your thoughts at 12 A.M.
You are worth so much more than possible speed bumps of exaggerated hopelessness that attempt to slow you down during your journey to self-success. Sleep. You are worthy of rest, too.
If you are the girl or the boy laying awake in bed at 12 AM trying to figure out your life's purpose, remember that it is only 12 AM. You can always figure it out in the morning.
