Many college students (myself included), make the choice to head back to our parents’ homes for the Labor Day weekend to see our beloved families one last time before returning to campus until Thanksgiving break. Without a doubt, we repeat these sentences, or some variation of them several times over the weekend.
1) “Yes! Home cooked meals!”
And you know your favorite dish is waiting for you when you get there.
2) “Yep! School is great!”
Like I said it was great on the phone yesterday.
3) “What happened to my old room?”
Chances are, your younger sibling took it over.
4) “Yes, I'm making good choices!”
On weekdays…
5) “My classes are pretty good.”
This is the billionth time you've asked how school is.
6) “I get along pretty well with my professors.”
Ask me how school is one more time. I dare you.
7) “I'm just going to Wal-Mart.”
Wow I didn't miss having to explain where I was going at what hour.
8) “Can you shut up for a minute?”
I miss the silence of the campus library more than ever.
9) “No...it doesn't work like that.”
Has my family always been this close-minded?
10) “No I haven't found a church or campus ministry.”
I have little interest in religion. Deal with it.
11) “I miss my dorm a little.”
It feels more like home to me there. I can be myself and not explain why I do what I do.
12) "I can't wait to see you guys again at Thanksgiving!"
Well, most of you.
