12 Things I Wish I Knew In High School

"If I could write a letter to me And send it back in time to myself at 17...I'd end up saying have no fear. These are nowhere near the best years of your life."

12 Things I Wish I Knew In High School

My younger brother is fifteen and is a freshman in high school this year. When I look at him, I see so much of my younger self. I see the way he acts and hear some of the things he says, and I think back to myself at that age and at those pivotal four years of my life. Looking back, there isn't a thing that I would change. Those four years molded me into the person that I am today and the person that I am striving to become. However, there are some things that I wish I'd known back then.

Here are some of those things that I wish I'd known:

1. More than likely, you're not going to marry your first love, and your best friend in high school probably won't be your maid of honor.

2. You might think your first heartbreak is going to kill you, but one day, you'll be able to look back and appreciate how much you grew from it.

3. You're not defined by your grades or your GPA.

4. Spend time with friends, but also appreciate the time you get to spend with family. You'll miss that more than anything when you move away from home.

5. Most teachers really do genuinely care about you, even when you don't see it.

6. You'll appreciate the AP classes once you get to college. Especially English. So many times, I catch myself sitting in class thanking my high school teachers for pushing me to be my best and for teaching me how to study, do research, and write papers.

7. You don't have to try so hard to gain someone's approval. A true friend will appreciate the real you, not the person you're pretending to be.

8. If you're struggling, don't be afraid to reach out to someone. No matter what you think, you're not strong enough to hold everything in and try to deal with it all on your own.

9. Reach out to people who are different from you. Get out of your comfort zone. You never know what could come from that.

10. Value friendships and don't let a relationship come between them. Not all friendships will stand the test of time, but that doesn't mean that they don't serve a purpose. Some friendships will last beyond high school. Cherish those. They are few and far between. Make time to hang out with those friends after high school, even when life gets crazy and you don't get to see them five days a week

11. Having a bad attitude and a smart mouth will do absolutely nothing for you, except keep you grounded for weeks or months at a time.

12. Life gets better. No matter how great or awful your high school experience was, it gets so much better in college.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
