12 Things You Know to Be True When You Have a Long Distance Best Friend

Having a Long Distance Best Friend (LDBF) can be tough because a person you may have hung out with all of your life is now really far away. You tend to miss them a lot too and its rough no matter how far away you are, be it 4 hours or 12 hours. You hung out almost every day throughout high school and now you’re at a college 4 hours away from them and only get to see them on breaks. Of course you can still keep in touch with them through multiple means of technology but it is still not the same and you cannot wait until you get to see them. If you have a LDBF you definitely know the following things to be 100% true.

1. When you see each other it’s like a party AND all of the holidays rolled into one

Finally, it’s holiday break and you get to see each other after what feels like forever! You get home at 11pm and even though its so late they come over and you immediately start talking and talk all night like you never left in the first place!

2. You have someone’s unbiased advice always

They always have great advice about the problems you’re facing in your friend group because they don’t personally know any of the people. They can give advice without having a bias because they haven’t formed relationships with the people you are asking them advice about and it’s so great.

3. You send each other the weirdest things

You tend to tell your LDBF all of your thoughts no matter how strange they are, and you know they will always listen and go with it because they’re them! Any thought that pops into your head or any meme you find on social media you know you can send to them without judgment (ok maybe a little), but they still always love you no matter what weird or strange things you say.

4. You have scheduled FaceTime calls

There is a time where you both aren’t busy towards the end of the day and you can just talk about what your day was like, even the boring things and you know your LDBF will listen no matter what. You tell them everything that is going on in your life at the moment and of course you have to talk about the Netflix show you’re currently watching!

5. Even if you haven’t seen them in forever its like nothing at all has changed

You see them and it’s like you just hung out the day before. You talk all the time, so you feel like you’re up to date, but you get together and the stories just flow out of your mouth like you don’t talk to them every day. It’s like you have so much to say that you need to get it out quickly or else you’ll completely forget.

6. You Snapchat them your life story

Honestly they don’t even care if you spam their phone with Snapchat’s because they miss you as much as you miss them! They want to know everything that is going on in your life as much as you want to know everything that is going on in their life. The good days and the bad! *cue videos of me lip syncing to every song known to man*

7. They feel like they already know your new friends and vice versa

You talk about your new friends so much and they talk about theirs so much that you feel like you know these people you have never met before personally. These people could actually be in your life and you could probably have a conversation with them because of all the information you have divulged to your LDBF.

8. They always answer your calls no matter what to make sure everything’s ok

Even if it’s 2 o’clock in the morning they will still answer the phone. If you’re really upset or if you have really good news! They will always be there for you and you will always be there for them. Even if you are just calling to tell them that you almost fell on your face walking to class and can never step foot outside your dorm room again! You know they’re always just a phone call away.

9. Nobody else understands your weird inside jokes

You always seem to talk in caps lock and have nicknames for each other from something that happened in the 8th grade, but you wouldn’t trade it for the world.

10. You’re the same person and you know what they’re going to say before they even have time to text it to you

It’s happened to everyone at some point, your friend says guess what and you know what she is going to tell you before she even writes it out. Also, she sends you a picture and you go “Hey I was just about to send you that!” and you're both astonished by how similar you are every single time.

11. Saying goodbye sucks but no matter what you know they will always be your best friend

When it comes time to say goodbye, you both act like you’re never going to see each other again, but of course you know you will. You’re going to miss each other so much, but you also know you’ll be talking 25/8 and will see each other again in a little over a month.

12. You know you have a friend for life

The good thing about a long distance friendship is that you know that your friend will always be there for you no matter what. You are extremely thankful for the friendship that you have and know that although there is distance between you, nothing will damage your close bond.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
