12 Things To Thank Our Older Sisters For

I've always loved being the baby of the family; given the choice I wouldn't have it any other way. I think I love it so much because of my wonderful family who took such good care of me. One of my biggest guides and protectors is my big sister. Even now that we are so far away from each other at different universities, my sister still makes sure I'm doing alright and checks in just to see what I'm up to. I've realized just how lucky I am to have my older sister, so to show my appreciation, here are some things to thank our older sisters for.

1. Paving the way for us. Our parents learned the ropes and figured things out with our older sister, and then they were pros when it came to us younger kids.

2. Being a familiar face in new places. On our first day of school, our older sister was there to show us around and keep us from being too nervous. We knew she'd take care of us.

3. She's our support system. Whatever we do, our big sister is there cheering us on and telling us how awesome we are.

4. Letting us hang out with her and her friends. I'm sure having us tagging along with her friends wasn't my her favorite thing, but she let us do it anyway.

5. The second wardrobe. Having an older sister is basically synonymous with having a second closet. My sister always told me to help myself to her stuff, which was great. But I know that isn't always the case. I also know that doesn't stop most people, so we still have your sister to thank for all the extra clothes.

6. Giving advice. Our older sisters will tell it like it is, whether we like it or not. "Does this outfit look stupid?" "Yes it does, go change." That kind of real honesty. From outfits and boys to breaking bad news to mom and dad, she's always there to help.

7. Being your recon girl. If she hears mom say that she's annoyed with you about something, she comes straight to you to warn you.

8. She's always a phone call away. No matter what's going on, we can always call her and she'll be there for us.

9. She's our best friend. My sister is honestly my best friend. After all the times you've fought and disagreed, sisterhood is forever, and she'll always be your go-to girl.

10. She's always got our back. If something happens or someone is mean to us, our older sister is the first one there to defend us and get rid of any other meanies.

11. All the years she drove us around before we could drive. She always drove us around when we needed and never complained. All those times in the car together are memories I'll cherish forever, and it's something that I really miss.

12. For still being our friend after seeing what a weird/annoying kid we were. Sis, you are a saint for putting up with me for all these years. Thanks for still liking me!

Being a part of any organization undoubtedly comes with the pitfalls of being grouped into negative stereotypes, and sororities are certainly no exception. Here are the top few things, that I find at least, are some of the most irritating misconceptions that find their way into numerous conversations...

8. "The whole philanthropy thing isn't real, right?"

Well all those fundraisers and marketing should would be a waste then wouldn't they?

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.
