As I waited for my first day of college as a nursing major, I had absolutely no idea what to expect. I told myself that if I didn't like it then I could just go with my back-up plan of studying Theology or Music. Nursing school has been nothing of that I expected it to be, but it is everything I could of ever imagined. Here are 12 things to keep in mind for those of you who are about to enter their first year of nursing school:
1. You probably won't use that $500 textbook that's listed on the syllabus.
Even though you might not use it, your professor will expect you to read it every single night religiously.
2. Study groups will help you tremendously, even if you don't think they will.
It wasn't until second semester that I started working in groups when it came to studying and I regret it. I received higher marks whenever I studied in groups because I looked at things through different perspectives from my peers.
3. You will never get enough sleep.
From having lab homework, A&P homework, 4 other classes homework, to making time to eat and bathe and have a social life; you will forget what sleep is but when you finally get to sleep: it'll be glorious.
4. It's okay if you don't get a perfect 4.0 GPA.
Just make sure you always try your hardest to keep your GPA up. Most schools have requirements based on their major for their grade point average that they must maintain based on each class. Always remember; C's get degrees
5. Manage your time the best you can.
I repeat, manage your time the best you possibly can! Time management is key if you want to sleep.
6. The exams are going to be tough.
This is where that $500 textbook comes in. Yeah, that one you'll never use in class. All the answers are hidden within. Flashcards are key and practice as if they're multiple choice.
7. If you are going to play a college sport as any major, it's going to be difficult.
One more time for those in the back; time management is key. Luckily most coaches will make you go to study hall once a week to get some homework done. Bring your class materials for those long bus rides to and from games to get some work done.
8. The classes are going to move very, very quickly.
It's not because your professor hates you, it's because they're trying to find the ones who really want to be there. Nursing programs are very competitive, and they do not want slackers.
9. When extra credit is given in any way, shape, or form; you better take it and do it.
Extra credit can only help you in the long run. Most professors won't ever offer you extra credit.
10. Nursing school is expensive.
There's a ton of fees you're going to have to pay when it comes to clinical time for your uniform, extra immunizations, gas to get to clinical, etc. Make sure for Christmas and birthdays you ask for some nursing gear or a renewal for your CPR certification.
11. Every major is equally difficult.
Don't be the one who complains to those who aren't nursing majors that your work load is harder or worse than theirs. Everyone's major is equally as difficult.
12. You will see that you, yourself, will change.
Whether you will be living at school or living at home, things will change. From making new friends to beginning a new chapter in your life, things are bound to change and that's okay.
There will be high's and low's through your first year of Nursing School but it will all be worth it in the long run.
