12 Things People With A "Weird" Taste in Music Know

Good music is good music. Period.

1. You have 2 Playlists: One for When You Drive alone and One when You're Driving With Friends

Personally, mine playlist for my friends is called "Social Driving," and it includes some soundtracks of Disney movies, the pop songs I knew when I was in sixth grade, and twenty-one Pilots.

"Forget You" or "Price Tag," anyone?

2. It's not that you don't like "modern" or "mainstream" music.

You just don't prefer it. I can sing some of the Top 100 with the best of them, but when I listen to music, I don't usually listen to what's on the radio.

I don't pretend to be one of those hipsters with a vendetta against "the mainstream," but I don't really like it.

3. You don't have a particular genre you only like.

I like a bunch of different genres, and I don't particularly have one genre I like. I listen to soft classic rock, folk, a little country, pop classics, whatever John Mayer is this album, and sometimes alt pop depending on my mood. Really if it appeals to me, it's on my playlist.

4. You like artists based on their musicality, message, or sound not necessarily where they rank on the popular charts.

Good music is good music. Period.

5. But that doesn't mean you don't like some popular artists though.

Disclaimer: most of my favorites are older popular artists though.

Once again, good music is good music. I love John Mayer, the Beatles, and Johnny Cash. The Lumineers and The Killers are pretty great too.

6. You (probably) love older music.

Most of my favorite artists got started in the industry decades upon decades ago. I've been on a huge Johnny Cash kick recently, have always loved John Denver, and appreciate James Taylor. I can rock out to some of the Stones, and enjoy a good Eagles' song every once and awhile.

My taste in music fits with the older crowd more so than people my own age.

6. Your specific taste might have a weird name.

Alt-country, psychedelic folk, fingerstyle, or vintage swoon, whatever you like

Personally, my taste really fits under the title of "Americana."

7. You don't get passed the AUX chord. Ever.

8. A lot of the time you like songs, but not everything the artist puts out. Or you've just listened to that song not the artist.

Just because you usually like the artist doesn't mean that every song is a winner, but you really get into the songs you like.

For example, I have listened to next to nothing by The Monkees, but "Me & Magdalena" is one of my favorites songs.

9. People don't usually ask for your opinion on music.

When people are asking for suggestions about what to listen to, they normally aren't looking for suggestions like Rayland Baxter, Mandolin Orange, or Brent Cobb.

10. You don't usually ask for other people's opinions either though.

I'm glad you love T. Swift and everything Drake puts out. Everyone is entitled to their own tastes (I mean this is what this whole article is about), but when you'd say "Thanks but no thanks," you really don't ask.

11. Spotify is your best friend.

One of the best decisions I've made is to be a Premium member, because I can rake through all kinds of new music and artists I never would've been exposed to.

Finally

12. You don't really think your taste in music is weird, but it's just easier to describe that way.

To you, it's just good music that you enjoy.

So keep on rocking out to the music you love.

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."
