Katy, Texas is a city located within the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugarland metropolitan area. It is one of the fastest growing cities in the United States. With plans to start buildings its' 8th high school, Katy is predicted to be larger than the city of Pittsburgh within the next two years, but to Katy natives, it will always be a small town (mostly because there is nothing to do). In high school, you dream of leaving, but everyone always finds their way back. Even though every time I go back home something has changed, there are some things that all Katy natives know to be true.
1. High school football will always be king.
People in Katy eat, sleep, and breathe high school football. It is a real life version of Friday Night Lights.
2. Waiting a ridiculous amount of time for Bahama Mama's on its opening day April 1st.
One time I waited 2 hours. So worth it.
3. Dividing where you live between Katy and "Old-Katy"
"I live in Old Katy, what about you?"
4. Midnight Rodeo aka high school reunion.
Be prepared to see everyone and their mom.
5. Documenting every life milestone with a picture at the MKT train.
Family portraits, senior pictures, and prom. You name it and people are here taking a picture. (Probably in white t-shirts and jeans)
6. Seeing this magazine in every business and doctor's office you visit.
It's really cool though when it's your sister's face.
7. Late night hangs at Whataburger.
Because there is literally nothing else to do. HBCB anyone???
8. Avoiding Katy Mills Mall whenever possible.
It's filled with junior high kids and strollers. No thanks.
9. Everyone has had at least one birthday party here.
The money machine was the best.
10. Trying to brave The Witches Grave.
But being too terrified to even leave your car.
11. Knowing someone everywhere you go.
Everyone who grows up here always returns so you're always bound to see someone you know.
12. Saying you can't wait to leave.
Deep down though you know one day you'll return like everyone else. Even though it may be boring sometimes and becoming way too crowded, it's home.
