12 Things You Can Find At A Farmers Market

In recent years, farmers markets have become a new and trendy way for people to buy their food. Farmers markets were formally known as outdoor markets where local famers would sell their fruits and vegetables directly to customers.

However, these markets have developed into so much more.

Not only do they sell fruits, vegetables, and other harvested products, but they also now sell local, handmade goods such as clothing, cheeses, soaps, and jewelry. Farmers markets have transformed from small farmsteads where homemakers would buy their vegetables, to large social events that hundreds of people attend every week. As summertime approaches, these markets will begin to pop up in cities and towns around the country, and if you’re looking for something to do, attending a farmers market is an experience that you don't want to miss. It is a fun way to enjoy real, local flavors, buy organic food, support local farmers and companies, meet new people, and learn more about your community. If you have never been to a farmers market, here are 12 things you might find at one.

Undoubtedly, you will find local fruits and vegetables. Farms from the local area will bring a variety of fresh produce and sell them at reasonable prices. From apples, to lettuce, to summer squash— everything is brought directly from nearby farms, and it tastes as fresh as it looks. If you’re an organic food fanatic, there is nothing more perfect for you than this produce.

You will also discover a variety of unusual produce that cannot be found in a supermarket. Farmers markets can sell some pretty unusual seasonal fruits and vegetables such as multicolored carrots, zucchini flowers, rare mushrooms, or purple potatoes. Even if you don’t plan on buying these fruits and vegetables, it's always interesting to learn about unfamiliar produce from your local area.

In addition to food, farmers bring plants, flowers, and herbsto the markets. You can buy fresh basil or local flowers for your garden. Because you are buying these plants directly from the farmer, they can give you free advice on how to grow and take care of them.

You will discover eggs, meats, and cheeses made from animals that have been raised locally, humanely, and without growth hormones. These products taste great because they are fresh, unlike those that sit on the shelves in grocery stores.

If you're not into meat, farmers markets have fish too.

In addition to your usual “farmers” that sell food at a farmer’s market, bakers from the local area sell their pies, scones, danishes, and other homemade goodies as well. These treats are made fresh and taste extra delicious.

Almost all of the food stands have free samples of their products. Who doesn't love free samples?

Local coffee shops set up stands at farmers markets and sell their beverages to the costumers walking around. A cold beverage is perfect for walking around on a hot day, and who doesn't love local coffee or tea?

Local restaurants or food companies bring food trucks and sell tasty meals. From breakfast sandwiches, to hamburgers, to international cuisines, this food is made fresh and tastes delicious.

You can bring your dog! Local pet shops and companies have stands at the market that sell homemade treats, food, and collars for your pet. Because of this, you will find a multitude of people walking around with their pets at farmers market.

Artists set up stands at the market and sell beautiful artwork. If you’re looking for a painting of your favorite spot around town, these artists usually have it. If not, you can talk to the artist directly and ask them to paint one for you. Not only are these professional paintings beautiful, but they are also sold at reasonable prices.

You’ll also discover handmade jewelry. Just like the food at a farmers market, these creations are usually made locally as well.

Even if you don't plan on buying anything, simply attending a farmers market is an experience that is worth your while. While walking around, you can observe products and artwork that represent the place you live. These markets encompass the heart of a community, and they bring a totality of flavors from a local area into one central hub. This summer, support local farmers and connect with your community by spending time at a nearby farmers market.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
