There is major flooding in Louisiana, but I bet you didn't know that. Between the medal count, Ryan Lochte, Simone Biles, the upcoming political election, and the little Syrian boy, you probably figured the flooding was over in Baton Rouge and the surrounding areas. In just two days, Baton Rouge area received over 21 inches of rain, but in some areas it topped more than 31 inches of rain.

Here are 12 things you should know about the Louisiana August 2016 flood.

1. At least 13 people are dead and 40,000 homes are damaged.

2. As of Friday, August 19 (almost a week after the flooding started) the President has yet to visit the affected areas.

3. At least 40,000 people have already applied with FEMA for aid.

4. More than 1,000 pets have been rescued.

6. Six schools in the East Baton Rouge district were damage and will remain closed.

7. Even a week after the rains, flooding hasn't stopped. It is getting worse and affecting more areas.

8. Over 11,000 people reportedly stayed in shelters at one time.

9. The Red Cross has served over 100,000 meals and snacks and the supply is running out.

10. This is the biggest disaster since 2012 Superstorm Sandy.

11. Taylor Swift has donated $1 million to flood relief.

For the entirety of my high school career, I was always seen as the goody-two-shoes. I never got in trouble with a teacher, I kept stellar grades, and when I wasn't doing extracurricular activities, I was at home studying. Even when I did go out, it was usually with a bunch of fellow band geeks. The night would end before 11:00 PM and the only controversial activity would be a fight based on who unfairly won a round of Apples-to-Apples when someone else clearly had a better card (I promise I'm not still holding a grudge).

Now that I'm officially an adult, I want to pursue some new things. I want to experience life in a way that I never allowed myself to do prior to entering college. These are the years that I'm supposed to embark on a journey of self-discovery, so what better way to do that than to create a bucket list?
