Middle school is an awkward and uncomfortable time for nearly everyone. Acne covered faces, first crushes, unusual growth spurts, lots of fashion trends, and attitudes that are at an all-time high. For anyone who is twenty-something now, you can remember having Abercrombie, the Black Eyed Peas, and Youtube to help you through. And if you nodded along reading any of those, then here are ten other things that you can probably remember doing in those strange, strange middle school years.

1. You Owned at Least One Abercrombie & Fitch Item

Tee-shirts just weren't cool without large embroidered words across the chest. If your swearshirt wasn't from Abercrombie, it was from Hollister. When put together with a pair of skinny jeans and Uggs, you were the hottest thing of the year.

2. Complained that You were the ONLY Person Without a Cell Phone

Regardless of when you got your first cellphone, it felt like everyone you knew had one before you. At this time smart phones were something adult-like and fancy...having a slide phone was all the buzz.

3. Learned Every Word to Boom Boom Pow

This number one song of 2009 made the phrase "I'm so 3008, you're so 2000 and late" the burn of the century.

4. Had Webcam Photo-shoots With Your Friends

Tilt your head, throw up a peace sign, perfect your side bangs, squeeze everyone into the frame and there you have the ideal 2010 selfie. If you weren't near a laptop, bringing your digital camera along was always a solid Plan B. Bonus points for a duck face.

5. AIM

You had all of your friends' screen names memorized, your excitement peaked hearing the ring of a new message notification, and planning out your away message was of utmost importance. The pre-texting trend that saved all of our social lives.

6. Watched Trending Videos on Youtube

"Viral" wasn't really a thing yet, and you couldn't just look up a video as soon as you heard about it. Back in the day, coming home from school and looking up all of the newest videos, like Fred, was something everyone is at least a little guilty of.

7. Communicated in Extreme Text Lingo

Cuz txting n full werdz is sm werk. Btw lylas, imy, lol. 8-D.

8. Layered Camis with Everything

We all did this, camis under tee-shirts, camis under tank-tops, camis under other camis. Some had lace, some were neon, some were 8 feet long....but they were the classic go-to. Throw a zip-up sweatshirt over it and you felt like you could walk onto any MTV reality show fitting right in.

9. Played "Just Dance" at Parties

Boys on that side, girls on this side, some teen-appropriate pop playing in the background, parents upstairs, and bowls of chips everywhere. What could liven up that party? Nintendo's "Just Dance" for Wii, of course! Some people were pros, others not so hot, but it made people laugh and gave us all something to play besides "Truth or Dare."

10. Used Facebook as a Personal Journal

Status messages were updated with any and all plans (or lack thereof as seen above). "Like for a tbh" was the best way to discover if a crush liked you, and pictures were posted from everything.

11. Took Things Like Science Fair, School Dances & Field Day Super Seriously

Who is going to win Tug of War? Did you see her science fair board...I heard her mom did it all. He didn't ask me to the dance, do you think I should still say hi to him? School events - were the big events.

12. You Had an Opinion on Justin Bieber

The year was 2009 and Beliebers were born. With his iconic white pants and purple hoodie look, pre-teen girls across the country were melting for this pop icon. However, not everyone jammed to "Baby." Love him or hate him, he was a part of middle school without a doubt.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
