1. Tuition
As an out of state student, I personally have trouble understanding this rule. If we are paying extra in travel expenses, and we are willing to move away from everything we know and love, why should we have to pay extra for our education? Answer: Aliens
2. Unknown territory
If you are moving out of state, its pretty obvious that you won't know anything around you. You won't know any of the cool hang spots, the best places to eat, or where to buy the things you need in a pinch without a local helping you out.
3. Finding a job
Finding a job is difficult no matter where you live, but to find a job for a select few months is nearly impossible if you don't work on campus. Most establishments require you to work during the holidays, and that is a huge no go if you lived out of state. The dorms are closed during the holidays so if you live on campus you don't have anywhere to live, and your family will most likely be upset that you are missing a family get together! So, if you are from out of state, you might want to apply for a job on campus so their schedule fits yours!
4. Finding friends
Friends..... Usually people just hang out with people they know from High School when they go to college, but in your case you aren't going to school with people from your High School, unless you are an extremely lucky person. You have to start all over again and try to find your crowd off of first impressions.
5. No support system
Going to a place where you don't know anyone can be really difficult, especially if you are having a hard time coping with the change. You have no one that you truly trust enough to open up to and your family is a whole state away! Sometimes a phone call just isn't enough..
6. Going home
Going home is pretty easy for people who live in the same state as their school. It takes some an hour or two, and others a few hours, but each way it can be a day trip. in my case, six and a half hours not including breaks takes all day just to get there! So trips home aren't as easy..7. Resources are limited
Being from out of state, you can't just drive home if you need something... Even if you have your family mail what you need to you, it takes a few days to get it. if you need it that day you have to run to the nearest store and buy it which is a pain since you already have it but you don't have access to it...
8. More freedom!!!!
Being far away from your family has it's perks! You have the freedom to be yourself and do what you want without worrying if you will run into someone your family knows. Complete freedom!9. More responsibility
But, with freedom comes responsibility! You have to do all of your paperwork, make your own decisions, and get yourself out of trouble. Say you get a flat tire on your way to class, the only people you can call is roadside assistance (which counts against you on your insurance), a tow truck and pay out of pocket, or pray that one of your friends are free at that time.
10. SO MUCH STUFF
When you are moving in to a dorm room, you have to bring basically your entire house because you can't really go home real quick to pick something up if you forgot it. So, if you have a roommate, they will most likely think you are a hoarder, but, in reality, you are prepared for everything!
11. Relying more on friends
If you are a forgetful person or accident prone, you rely more on your friends to help you out with things. sometimes a roommate or suite mate are your saving grace!
12. Visits are more meaningful
It doesn't matter whether you are visiting home or someone comes to visit you, they are way more meaningful than they would be if they were like a weekly thing. Being so far away from home can get really lonely so when people come around or are doing something really intentional for you it means so much more!
