Some Lessons The Best Year Of My Life Has Taught Me

After completing what I would call the best year of my life, I have realized many things about myself and the world that have changed the way I approach this life we are given.

1. Going for a walk will cure anything

Whether you are stressed about a test or bored out of your mind, going for a walk will clear your head, give you something to do, allow you to appreciate the world around you, and even give you an easy little exercise.

2. Life isn't always what you expect

You may have a life plan all set out for yourself; Which is great, but, if life takes a sharp turn with absolutely no warning, don’t let that stop you from pursuing what you need to do to reach your full potential of happiness.

3. Confidence is being yourself and not apologizing for it

Some people mistake confidence as someone thinking they are better than their peers. Confidence, on the other hand, is really not being afraid of others judging you for doing what makes you happy.

4. Be content with alone time

After having just transferred to a new school in a city of millions of people where I knew absolutely no one, I have learned that being alone is okay. In fact, spending some time alone will allow you to find your true self and what makes you most happy without the influence of others around you.

5. Be proud of how far you have come

Think about who you were as a little girl and what kind of person she would want you to be right now. Are you making her proud?

6. A smile can really go a long way

Not only will it boost your own mood, but smiling at someone whether they are an employee or just someone on the street can truly make them feel appreciated.

7. You are your own priority

If you feel like you need a break, whether it’s mentally or physically, listen to what your body is telling you and do what you have to do to rest up. Trust me, it is one of the best things you can do for your well being.

8. Your body does so much for you, treat it properly

You are a human being with the capability to be as healthy as you can and live as long as possible. Thank your body by showing it that you care.

9. Help others and be giving

Whether it is giving a homeless person food or even just holding the door for someone with their hands full, all small acts of kindness add up.

10. Nature was here first

Appreciate the fact that planet earth is allowing us to live here. Don’t litter, save water, plant a tree, compost, recycle, eat more veggies and save paper.

11. We are all human

In the end, we are all just trying to find fulfillment in life and want to do what makes us most happy. Always remember to forgive, keep an open mind and take others into consideration.

12. You have to leave your comfort zone to accomplish amazing things

The best things in life are not going to come easy. If you want something bad enough, you will work for it.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
