It is true that in the South we do things a little different, including the way we say things. Here are just a few of our common sayin’s that you might not understand if you weren’t raised down here.

1. Bless your heart

This one is my personal favorites! It is simply a nice way of saying, “you’re being stupid”.

2. Suck it up buttercup

Means: you will be fine and/or stop complaining.

3.Barking up the wrong tree

Means it ain't any of your business so stay out of it!

4. Ma’am

This is the polite way you respond to every women/girl, no matter the age.

5. Y’all

You+All= Y’all. It means two or more folks.

6. Hun

Everyone is considered hun, young, old, girl, boy. This term is also perfect if you can’t remember someones name.

7. Muddin’

This is an event that involves a fourwheeler or truck and a big mud hole. The objective is to get the muddiest.

8. Fixin' to

Meaning I will do that in a minute or whenever I get around to it.

9. Yonder

Refers to anything over “there”.

10. Hold your horses

You need to calm it down and wait a minute.

11. Reckon

Meaning: I think…

12. Bite off more than you can chew

You took on more than you can handle.

You took care of me and my brothers our entire lives and you still continue to! I will not be able to truly grasp all of the hard work that you put into this family until I create my own one day. But, I know that there are plenty of times I forgot to give you a simple thank you or an appreciative smile. I thank you for everything that you have done for me and will continue to do for me. Here are some examples of those times where you had my back and I forgot to pat your back for saving me:

College is hard. As people ages 18-22, we’re just trying to figure out what we’re doing with our lives, our careers, our eating habits, exercise routines, sleep patterns, and other necessities for adult life. We definitely don’t take proper care of ourselves; it’s basically impossible when we have essays, tests and readings due and somehow we’re supposed to eat right, exercise and sleep. We’re doomed to get sick. I have zero experience in science but when I get sick there are certain things I do to make myself better.

Now that it seems “talking” is the new way to date, and will stay that way until another idiotic term is used to describe the people who can’t settle down and just date someone, I feel as if it’s time to go over the unwritten rules of “talking.”

Rule 1. Having feeling without feeling.
