People are placed into your life for a reason; some are here to teach you a lesson, some are here for you to lean on during the obstacles you face, and if you're lucky some people will be here for both of those things combined. I've been blessed with a few people that I call my best friends, and here are a few things that make them stand out.
1. They get your jokes.
While most of the time I think they're only laughing because I find my own jokes so funny, it's still important to have someone to laugh with you.
2. They're honest with you, sometimes too honest.
My best friends have no problem telling me that my shoes are ugly or my hair is doing something terrible.
3. Their family has become your family.
My best friend's mom is my one true fan in anything I do and always knows what to say when I'm feeling down.
4. You can order for them at any fast food restaurant.
The order "two McDoubles ketchup only with a small Coke" has been engraved on my brain for years.
5. They make you angry so often you can't stay mad at them.
My best friends can tell you how often I pretend to be mad at them, but they immediately say something funny and I can't help but get over it.
6. You get put in the oddest situations together.
From old lady book clubs, playing in what we originally thought was mud but ended up being manure, to sleeping in the trunk of a car, and sporadic adventures to Chicago, my friends and I always have a story to tell afterwards.
7. They've held your hand during the toughest of times.
That sounds cheesy; let me clarify the meaning of toughest of times: For me it's usually haunted houses, both for adults and children, and scary movies.
8. You have a group chat mostly filled with memes.
This is pretty important. If you don't have one already, make one quick.
9. You have weird nicknames that no one understands.
Our Twitter names were Carseat, Dawayne, Cletus, Martin Fries, and Lindabread for a while if that tells you anything.
10. You've stayed up until 8 a.m. for reasons unknown.
Reading the "you're part of the loves pizza squad" horoscopes and watching YouTube videos is only funny in the wee hours of the morning.
11. They've seen you cry and were sworn to secrecy about it.
I've cried during "My Little Pony," dog commercials, and haunted houses. All of which were witnessed by my best friends who swore they'd tell no one and then told the entire state of Michigan. One time Raven cried over losing Flappy Bird and I was sworn to secrecy. Whoops.
12. There are rare moments of kindness and they're the best.
In the midst of making fun of each other constantly there with be an occasional moment of gratitude and love for tolerating each other, and it's beautiful.
