12 Reasons Why You Need To Study Abroad
Jamie Moran

I’ve made it one of my goals during my college career to study somewhere outside of the United States. One thing we, as students, should value the most is having the opportunity to live another life. We are so accustomed to the typical American college experience such as living in a dorm, eating at a dining hall, and using every ounce of motivation we have to wake up for an early morning class after a long night of studying (or Netflix). We have to explore ourselves. How spontaneous can we be? We need to study abroad to fall in love, not only with the experience, but also with another culture. We need to be familiar with new interests and become fascinated. Let’s find adventure somewhere different, somewhere new, somewhere besides the United States. These are reasons we need to catch the next flight out of here!

1. More sight-seeing, less studying

The reason you're abroad is to learn more about what's outside of the textbook. Inhale the unique and special journey you're about to begin and be obsessed with it.

2. A reason to splurge on a professional camera and go-pro

I'll probably need to relive every moment that I had abroad frequently, so these are obvious things to pack. These pictures featured in this article were all taken by one of my friends who studied abroad last semester!

3. Meet new people

Going to a new place with no one you know is quite a feeling, but chances are a lot of people are in the same position. It gives you the opportunity to spend this experience with people who want to share it with you!

4. Authentic cuisine

Who cares about anything else when you can spend your life savings on insanely delicious dishes and wine (or whatever is desired by your tastebuds).

5. Be your own Lizzie McGuire

Yes, take pictures in front of monumental statues and places.

6. The more you save now, the more you'll be able to spend later

Work hard, play hard.

7. Fashion

Europe allows you to embrace the fashion world, so if you're into it, do it.

8. Celebrations/Festivals

There are so many things that are not celebrated in America. Find out what these are and get involved.

9. Night life

The night life ranges in many cities so find what fits you best and have a blast!

10. Exploring places you thought you'd only ever see in pictures

A picture can be worth a thousand words so take as many as you possibly can because they'll be with you for a lifetime. Although, don't forget to take in your reality and the natural beauty of it all. It's not every day you'll be cruising the Amalfi Coast.

11. Quality time with your best friends

Go with your best friend. Meet new people with them. Explore these new places with them. Just do it. You won't regret it.

12. Stories

This trip will allow for a million stories to accompany you on your journey back to the states. I'm sure you'll have a trip of a lifetime.

Travel safely and maybe I'll see ya there!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
