12 Reasons Why Syllabus Week Is The Best Week Of The Semester

The first week back to school after winter break is glorious. There are so many things that are great about a clean start and new classes. You can forget about all of the stress-eating and prolonged crying that you did during finals week, because syllabus week is here! You better enjoy it while you can, though, because unfortunately, it doesn't last forever. Before you actually realize that you're back at school and it's not a massive party every night of the week, here are some things that you can do and enjoy during your first week of the new semester.

1. You do nothing in class.

Usually, your teachers take 20 minutes to introduce themselves and skim the syllabus, leaving you with extra time to take a nap before your next class. Take naps while you can, because finals week will be the exact opposite.

2. You get to catch up with your friends after spending an entire month apart.

3. You can go to bed at 8 P.M. or 2 A.M. by choice.

Instead of staying awake because you forgot to write a research paper, you can stay awake because you actually want to mess up your sleep schedule. What a concept.

4. You have an optimistic view of the upcoming semester.

You look at your syllabus and appreciate the aesthetic of the calendar of assignments and the clear directions for projects. However, what you're not taking into account is that you actually have to do these assignments and that they will most definitely cause you stress.

5. You can try a new club.

Go to the first meeting of a club that you've been thinking of trying. If it doesn't live up to your expectations, then at least you got the free pizza that was inevitably at the meeting. It's a win-win.

6. You make “New Semester Resolutions” that you stick to about as religiously as your New Years Resolutions.

7. You have an excuse for being late to class.

"Oh, I'm sorry professor, I didn't know where the room was!"

8. You haven’t missed any classes yet, so you can plan the days you want to skip.

9. You get a breather from your family.

After being in close quarters with your parents and siblings for a full month, you suddenly remember why you love school so much.

10. Your dorm room is stocked with the Costco food you bought just before coming back, so you don’t have to go to the dining hall immediately.

11. You have a bit of money saved from the job you worked over break to spend on things.

Such as Grubhub and concert tickets.

12. You have a new semester to make a ton of fantastic memories!

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
