12 Reasons Why Being Sick In College Is The Worst

Being sick sucks all of the time. There never really is a good time to be sick, of course. But being at school away from home is one of the worst times to be sick. You have to learn how to take care of yourself for once while you struggle to handle all the things you have to do.

So here's a list of reasons why being sick in college is the worst.

1. You're fine one day and then sickness comes out of nowhere.

How does this happen? Why do bad things happen to good people? Everything was going well, then BAM, you're sick and you feel like you're slowly dying. You know some bad days are coming.

2. Getting germs is so easy.

College means you are constantly surrounded by germs. If you live in a dorm, it's awful and there's little chance you'll escape the year without being sick. Classrooms are always dirty. Dining halls are gross. Bars are gross. It's all gross.

3. Taking medicine is hard.

Let's be honest, you don't know what medicine to take most of the time. Your doctor or mom takes care of that for you. You have to figure this part of adulthood out on your own. It's rough.

4. Also, medicine is expensive.

How am I supposed to afford this? It's ridiculous! I'm too broke to spend $20 on a box of meds.

5. Speaking of the doctor...

As a college student, you have to adult more by scheduling your own doctor appointments. It's a big responsibly, I know. I'd rather make my mom do it for me still, tbh, but this is an important accomplishment of growing up.

6. Naps are more frequent than ever.

Nothing cures sickness better then rest, so you take advantage of napping whenever you can. You gotta do what you gotta do.

7. Getting out of bed for class sucks.

During breaks between classes it is time to snuggle and bed and wish your sickness will go away. But when you have to get up to walk back to campus, it's painful.

8. Simple tasks become difficult.

You can barely text, read your book for English, and walk to the dining hall. Your energy has magically disappeared and you can't do anything about it.

9. Your social life is gone.

You can't even imagine going uptown to the bars or to a party. There's nothing that can pry you out of your comfy bed. While you're dying, so is your social life. Plus, your friends want to avoid getting sick, anyway.

10. You lose your appetite.

Food is awesome, so losing your appetite sucks. It sucks even more when you just went to the grocery store and spent you meager earnings on food and it goes to waste. Being a broke college student, wasting money on food is the worst. And you don't want to waste your meal swipes at the dining hall. We all know the university overcharges us like crazy for meal plans.

11. All you want is sleep, but you have too much to do.

Being a college student is hard. We have papers to write, exams to study for, work, organization meetings and more. There's not enough time in the day. And being sick makes doing all of those things almost impossible. Throughout the day, you await the time you can take some Nyquil and crawl into bed.

12. But most of all, Mom isn't here to take care of you.

I don't think there will ever be an age when I don't want my mom to take care of me when I'm sick. She's the best nurse out there and always knows what to do to make me feel better. She really is the real MVP of curing any illness.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever.
