College towns are a place of growing, independence, learning, and everyone's favorite part: fun. Tallahassee especially, has been know to be quite a party town, not just on game day, but all the time. Everyone has their favorite bar around here and some are more popular than others like Recess, The Strip, and Midtown. There are plenty of bars in Tallahassee, but the personal best is The Palace Saloon.

I know you're thinking "What a dive bar" and although it is, thats what makes it even better. If you haven't been to the Palace, you're missing out on one of Tallahassee's best bars. Here are the 12 reasons the Palace is the bar to go to.

1. Darts and Pool

I don't know about you, but when I'm at the bar I like to be moving around and doing things. Not to mention, I'm super competitive, so playing games is one of the first things on my list of things to do. There is a row of dart boards when you walk through the door, so you and a group of friends can play darts all night long. They also have four pool tables, if that's your preference. It is a popular thing to there, so on busy nights it can be hard to get a board or table. Regardless, it's a great way to make new friends and have a good time. Not to mention, you can make a drinking game out of it, place bets (especially loser buys next round), and with playing games you don't even pay attention to how much you're drinking which is an easy way to put back a few.

2. TVs so that you can watch games and play Mario Kart.

If you can't make it to a game or it's out of town, that's okay because you can go hang out at the Palace and watch it. If darts and pool aren't your thing, they have a TV that allows you to be competitive with Mario Kart. I bet it's a blast playing Mario Kart after a few drinks and it never hurts to have a favorite place to watch the games!

3.They may not have liquor, but they have sake.

Okay, I know many of you might like to drink liquor but hey, sake gets you pretty twisted just the same. Even better they mix it with energy drinks or Mountain Dew that make it slide down nice and easy. Not to mention, you can get pitchers of sake and share with your friends or drink it by yourself. Be warned though, the sake sneaks up on you fast and before you know it, you are drunk. Don't forget to see if they still make their crazy concoction of beer, sake, wine, and energy drink. It's gross, but its fun to see if you can get it down.

4. Beer. Lots of Beer.

Who doesn't enjoy a good beer? If not, revert to reason 3. Not to mention, they do have wine and some frozen pouches of alcohol. If you are a beer drinker, their beer is magical. Something about their beer gets you drunk and drunk fast. Lets be serious, that's what we all want. Pitchers of beer are by the plenty and there are bottled beers if that's your preference. There is a pretty good selection of beers compromised mostly of the basics like Yuengling, Budweiser, Bud Light, Michelob Ultra, etc., but they also have IPAs and Proof beers to chose from. If you're a beer person, this is definitely your spot.

5. You can control the music.

We all want to listen to music while out, obviously, but even better, you can control what is played in the bar. Honestly, that used to be the highlight of my night going there and controlling the Jukebox. They have quite the selection of songs to chose from for anyone's preference (even the weird ones), and it's the best when you pick a popular tune and everyone starts singing and dancing. Who doesn't want to pick the songs that are the music to the night for yourself and others?

6. Directly across the street from the stadium. Place to be for game day.

If you're pre-gaming for a football game, you're at the Palace. Literally a block away and great drink specials makes for the perfect place to start. People park their RVs in the parking lot; some are grilling, playing games, and everyone is having a good time. I won't lie, it gets pretty packed but everyone is cheering on the team so it's a good time!

7. Open from 3pm-2am.

Day drinking anyone? I know I've had my fair share of day drinking at the Palace. It's great too because not as many people are there so you basically have the bar to yourself.

8. Solid drink specials.

Need I say more though? Nobody, especially college kids, want to spend an arm and a leg paying to get their drink on. At the Palace, beer and sake are relatively inexpensive and they tend to do drink specials during the week. The Palace doesn't overcharge you for crappy drinks. You pay for what you get. Make sure to check out their specials and to ALWAYS tip the bartenders!

9. They have their own 5K.

Exercise and beer? Sounds like a plan, or a contradiction. Either way, the Palace has their 5K every year, that a bunch of people look forward to and join in. At the end of the race, participants are rewarded with alcohol and you can't go wrong there. While you're at it, you should get a Palace 5K shirt too. Who doesn't want to end a 5K with a nice, cold beer?

10. If you're a smoker, inside is perfect for you. If not, there's an outside patio to hang out.

Yeah, I know a lot you might not be smokers and that might deter you from the place, but once you get past that you'll learn to love the Palace in all it's smoky glory. If not, hang out on the patio. You can still hear the music, there is a bar out there, and you can sit around with friends. Hey, Jabari might even be there to draw a portrait and they are pretty amazing. You should definitely check it out.

11. It's the place where if you frequent, everyone knows your name.

It's not Cheers and you're not Norman, but if you're a regular, they know you. There is a range of people of all ages and types that come here. Many of them are regulars that go to the bar all the time and the Palace has become it's own community because of that. Once you become a part of it, the Palace is where you go out or at least where you end your night. The Palace always makes for a good time and is exactly why people keep coming back. This is the place where friends become family.

12. You can leave your mark.

I know we all want to be remembered. We can't help but to wish for it when we have left a place. Thankfully, the Palace comes through for you. At the Palace, you can buy a tile in the roof to decorate and add to the collection that is already there. You can design whatever you want and get as many tiles as you want. This allows you to be a part of the bar and to leave something of yourself behind even when you have graduated and moved away.

This dive bar in Tally might get overlooked, but it's the token gem. This is the type of place where you always have a good time and always have a new story to tell with each visit. Since the 4th of July weekend is upon us, take the time to go party it up at the Palace Saloon. Can't get anymore American than that!

It's officially December. There is less than a month of 2024, and I still feel like yesterday was summer. Now comes the merriest time of the year, the Christmas season.

Everyone has been waiting for this time of year since mid-October (which is way too early, in my opinion) or before. It's a time of love, family, memory-making, and gift-giving. A lot of times when I ask friends and family what they want, I get a lot of "I don't know" or "I don't care."

mu bucket list

I was sitting at my cubicle, now that I am an adult, looking at the rain pouring down on the windowsill, bumming on life, wishing for the rain to just stop for a full day.

There are moments where we count down the hours until work is over and how many more days till the weekend, and this many weeks until something exciting. Or something like that? Well, I was bumming because my next day off from work is not until Memorial Day weekend, which is not until the end of May. And since this is my first year out of college being a “real person,” I am totally missing the winter, spring and summer breaks. I am sure all of us have felt this way even if just for a hot minute…

Great Value Colleges

If you go to or went to Kent State, then more than likely you have done or will do some of these things.

1. You’ve slipped and fallen on the ice at least once.

The winters at Kent are brutal, and while the heated sidewalks and some great snow boots are always a help, there’s no chance you won’t bust it on the ice at least once in your four plus years at school.
