When you go to college, you never realize just how dependent you were on your mom your whole life. You've lived with her for eighteen years and now you're getting snatched away like a puppy with separation anxiety. So here's 12 reasons why your mom should be allowed to go to college with you:
1. Doctor's appointments
Let's face it, there's nothing scarier than going to the doctor alone. When they ask you what's wrong, you can't look at your mom anymore and expect her to explain everything.
2. Grocery shopping
Without your mom, self-control goes out the window. You want Oreos AND Hershey kisses? You'll probably get both and spend all the money left in your bank account.
3. Budgeting
While we're on the subject, it's almost impossible to to budget in college. You expect to be able to live off of that $100 in your bank account the whole first semester, but then you go shopping and find five different things you "can't live without." If your mom was there she could tell you not to get those five dresses that all look the exact same.
4. Laundry
Now, your mom may have taught you to do your own laundry at a young age like mine, but it is a completely different ball game in college. What your mom never told you was how to deal with people taking your laundry out of the dryer mid-cycle to put theirs in. This makes your clothes smell like must, and forces you to completely re-wash them, and your mom would have never done that.
5. Cleaning
My mom is the queen of cleaning, so naturally, I hate it. Whenever I cleaned at home, it was never because I was doing so for my benefit. But, when you live with another person in a shoe box it's hard to ignore the mess you're making.
6. Relationships
You're mom has been through it all and is obviously the expert on relationships. Without her expert advice it's hard to discern the good from the bad. Without her with you, you have to resort to talking to your friends, and it just isn't the same.
7. Important Paperwork
FAFSA, job applications, taxes and scholarships are all words a college student cringes at the thought of. When you're knee deep in social security numbers and household incomes are the times you really want your mom to live in your dorm with you.
8. Exams
Your mom is the perfect stress reliever, as she knows exactly what to say to make you feel better about the exam you just failed. In college she can't drive you to go shopping or get some comfort food, you just have to be an adult and deal with it. If your mom is really nice she might send you a care package or two, but for the most part you're on your own.
9. Healthy eating
Freshman 15 is no joke. If you don't watch what you eat and exercise regularly, that junk food will catch up to you pretty quickly. When you lived at home your mom made sure you had a nutritious meal because she cares about your well being. But your mom isn't in your dorm room ready to scold you when you pick up the fifth chocolate chip cookie you've had tonight.
10. Bedtime
"I'm going to bed early tonight" is probably the biggest lie any college student has told themselves. Moms are the queens of telling us when to go to bed so we won't hate ourselves in the morning. Without her you'll be 11 episodes deep into a new show on Netflix and next thing you know it's 3 a.m.
11. Friendships
Somehow your mom can always see when your friend isn't really a friend at all before you can. It's almost as if moms have an instinct for bad influences. Without that instinct you're on your own to weed out potential best friends, and potential enemies.
12. GNO
Without your mom, girls' night out just isn't the same. You can't tell your friends something funny your brother said and expect them to laugh about it with you the same way your mom would. She isn't there to help you decide if that shirt really is cute, or to have heart to hearts in the car together.
All in all moms are the best friends you'll ever have, because they know you better than you know yourself. And without her helping you with all of these things you have so many stories to tell her when you get home. The time you spent missing her is completely forgotten when you go home and she reminds you why you're working so hard at college.
