12 Provocative Videos That Brilliantly Address Social Issues Facing 2017

Since ringing in the new year only 3 short months ago, 2017 has begun to shape up into one of the most socially progressive eras thus far. From the travel ban to the question of Planned Parenthood's future to the grappling destruction of our environment, not to mention the Women’s March that prompted millions of people to walk for equality, there's been lots of unrest in the U.S.. Shit is hitting the fan and it’s crazy to see how people are reacting now, not only as a nation, but on a global scale. Here I have compiled a list of some incredibly powerful videos that address some of 2017’s biggest issues. You'll laugh, you'll cry, but bottom line is, it's about to get real.

1. Confronting Rape: “But, what were you wearing?”

Would you throw blame on a mugging victim all because they were wearing a flashy watch? Probably not. So why would anyone blame a victim of sexual assault on their attire. No one ever was asking for it.

2. Debunking Micro aggressions: “You’re pretty… for a black girl.”

You are being rude and ignorant by making comments like this. Don’t be that guy. No one likes that guy.

3. Taking a sip of ‘Diet Racism’: “Do you say kinda racist stuff but stop short at the N word?”

Try to curb those racist sentiments. Awareness is the first step. Take a peek at this video and see if you recognize any of these behaviors in yourself.

5. Understanding Privilege: “Realizing… that no amount of hard work or legislation can make up that gap.”

It can be difficult to understand other people’s world views when you’ve never been exposed to certain experiences. This video visually illustrates how privilege shapes our opportunities and perceptions.

6. Coming Out: “Woman seeking man ... *scratch that* ... woman.”

A wildly powerful video that depicts the inner struggle as people come to terms with the truth in their heart.

7. Developing Real World Connections: “The problems we have today can't be solved with the same thinking we used when we once created them.”

Put down the phone and have a conversation. Connect with the people who are right in front of you and you may learn something.

8. True Love: “So much of what is love, is fish love.”

A brief explanation of how we use love to our advantage in comparison to how we use love to give others the advantage.

9. Overcoming Stereotypes: “This is the danger of a single story…”

This is a longer video but every second of it is filled with wisdom and inspiration. If you don't already know Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie I suggest you look her up. She’s a beautifully intelligent woman with some very important things to say.

10. Control vs. Love: #ThatsNotLove

It can be a struggle to decipher the line between concerning love and overbearing control. Recognizing the difference is critical in taking care of yourself mentally, emotionally and physically.

11.Is Marijuana 100% Legal?: Fact Check

Spoiler Alert: Weed isn't technically legal. John Oliver examines the legality of weed on a federal and state level. The 16 minute video (every second is enlightening and worth it) highlights the major gaps in America's policies for medical and recreational marijuana use.

12. Our President, Donald Trump: "Nobody builds walls better than me."

You'll laugh at how uneducated he sounds, but then cry because this is actually our president.

A lot of info to take in. But enjoy your new found knowledge and never stop educating yourself!

And, just to lighten the mood a bit, here is a compilation video of cute puppies living their puppy lives. Because, when humanity fails, dogs win.

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.

Yes, it IS a sport. Yes, I fall all the time. No, I do not ride in jeans with a cowgirl hat on.

Growing up I have always wanted to own a horse. My grandparents own a well known equestrian facility in Georgia, so I have been riding since I was born. A bond between a person and their horse is a bond so strong that it cannot be broken. Everywhere I went I wanted to be around horses, even forcing my family to go on trail rides during vacations. Horses have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember has taught me great responsibility, as well as 14 things that all equestrians can relate to.

College is super hard. Between working, studying, and having a social life, it feels like a struggle to just keep afloat.

I understand. When you feel like your drowning and there's no way to stay afloat I understand that it feels like everyone else is doing just fine. I understand all the frustration, long nights in the library, and that feeling that you want to just throw in the towel. I understand that sometimes it's too hard to get out of bed because your brain is already filled with too much information to remember. I understand because I am also feeling pretty burnt out.

No Matter How Challenging School Gets, You Have To Put Your Health First — A Degree Won't Mean Anything If You're Dead

Some of the best advice I've ever received was from my social studies teacher in sophomore year of high school. He stated, "If you don't know it at midnight, you're not going to know it for the 8 a.m. exam, so get some sleep."

It's such a simple piece of advice, but it holds so much accuracy and it's something that the majority of college students need to hear and listen to. "All-nighters" are a commonality on college campuses in order to cram in studying for an exam that is typically the next day.
