Summer is winding down, students are making their way back to the Shoals for the upcoming semester and everyone is looking to wrap up the warm weather with some beautiful scenery and exciting views. If you are in and around the Shoals area, here are some places to trek and check out with friends and family.

1. Cane Creek Canyon Nature Preserve

Equipped with a beautiful waterfall, miles of trails to hike and a clear view for miles, this destination is perfect for getting out and about. It's a short drive from anywhere in the Shoals. I was there last week, and I'm already dying to get back!

2. Dismals Canyon

While not technically in the Shoals, the trails are absolutely breath-taking at the bottom of this sandstone gorge. It is located just outside of Phil Campbell, and trust me, it's worth the drive.

3. Wildwood Park

This gem is within walking distance of the University of North Alabama. The creek is great for a relaxing tubing or kayaking trip. Pack your sunscreen and take off!

4. Spring Park

Downtown Tuscumbia is home to the beautiful Spring Park. Fully stocked with a gorgeous rock waterfall, all the geese you can imagine and a playground. You can have it all!

5. Joe Wheeler State Park

This park is rumored to have some of the best fishing in the Shoals! It's a fisherman's and camper's paradise just down the road in Rogersville.

6. Wilson Park

If you're looking for a shady spot to sit and relax after a long day of shopping in downtown Florence, look no further than Wilson Park. Listen to the rushing water of the fountain, and just relax!

7. Veterans Memorial Park

Disc golfers and history buffs, rejoice! Veterans Memorial Park offers a disc golf course, tennis courts and exhibits dedicated to veterans.

8. McFarland Park

String up your Eno by the Tennessee river, grab some Miami Ice, eat at Stanfield's Riverbottom Grille, or simply enjoy a picnic near in this scenic park. It's one of my favorite places to be!

9. Shoal Creek Preserve

With over 300 acres of woods, this preserve offers many trails and bluffs for sight seers and explorers looking for some rugged terrain good for biking and hiking.

10. Deibert Park

If you'd like to relax with some cool walking trails, or need a place with a playground to take the kids, Deibert Park is the place to be!

11. River Heritage Park

This is the perfect place for a family outing in Florence. Enjoy the picnic tables and splash pad with your friends and loved ones.

12. Gattman Park

Located in Muscle Shoals, Gattman park also has a splash pad, two gyms and many other facilities visitors can utilize.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

As an English Major in college, I have a lot of writing and especially creative writing pieces that I work on throughout the semester and sometimes, I'll find it hard to get the motivation to type a few pages and the thought process that goes behind it. These are eleven thoughts that I have as a writer while writing my stories.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
