Whenever I tell people I live in Portland, all of them always say,"Oh, gotta love Portland."
The opportunities are endless in this gorgeous, eccentric city -- sometimes too endless. There's so much to do and so little time to do them that I often just give up and end up going to the same coffee shop or bookstore rather than trying something new. But if you are looking to enjoy some of the best experiences Portland has to offer, these are my suggestions...
1. Portland Saturday Market
Whether it be to buy funky earrings made out of porcupine quills or to watch henna being applied to the stomachs of pregnant women, the Saturday Market is the place to be! This is a great spot to find the richly diverse and eccentric members of the Portland community, and topped with fresh, locally-sourced produce and a gyro, I am one happy gal when I leave the Saturday Market. 10/10 recommend all the way.
2. Portland Art Museum
Are you one of those people who sees a piece of art which just doesn't make sense? I am too. I sometimes look at a canvas splashed carelessly with paint or a sculpture of a black box and I just don't get it. However, going to the PAM is an unforgettable experience and one in which you don't have to appreciate modern art as much as abstractness in order to have a really nice time here.
3. Papa Haydn
If you’re into dessert (which you should be), you should probably live at Papa Haydn. Although they serve high-end meals in general, their desserts are on a whole other level of ‘wow’. Cappuccino brownies and summer champagne cake (yes, it’s a thing) just make every calorie worth it. On an average girl’s night out, this is the best way to treat yourselves to a chic, fancy outing.
4. Monticello Antique Marketplace
You know those places where you walk in empty-handed and walk out with a bird cage, a vintage dress, a feathered hat and a dollhouse from the 60s? Oh, that’s just me.
5. Goodwill
Portland is the place to thrift. Whether it be at Goodwill or local vintage shop, this is always a must. You can get the best parts to a costume as well as random bits and pieces which just diversify your wardrobe and spice up your style.6. St. Johns Theater
Old theaters, if you’ve never experienced them before, are incredibly fun. This theater perfectly combines the modern element of high definition movies with small audiences, classic comfy seats and popcorn in old-fashioned cartons. I’ve gone here a few times, and it’s perfect for an organic movie-watching experience.7. Lan Su Chinese Gardens
A truly lovely, zen-like setting, the Chinese gardens are ideal for quiet dates or just to be on your own and reflect on life. People don’t seem to spend enough time on these quiet sessions of introspection and this is a great spot to do so.
8. Powell's
Um, duh? You can get lost in Powell's for hours, especially after reading a cookbook, an Agatha Christie novel and finishing Billy Crystal’s autobiography. Oh, I’m the only one who does that?
9. Hoyt Arboretum
The Hoyt Arboretum? Yes. Just yes. If you love hiking, trees and spending time in harmony with nature, hiking in this amazingly diverse, forested area is the best way to spend a Saturday morning.
10. Besaw's
Comfort food is always a safe option for a rainy Saturday morning in Portland, and Besaw’s on 21st is the place for it. How could fresh Belgian waffles and avocado toast not be the best way to start the day?
11. Pioneer Square
Although you can go to an average mall just about anywhere, you can’t find a place like Pioneer Place in any place other than Portland. This gorgeous mall is, like a lot of Portland hotspots, a balanced combination of conventional chain stores and unique, local stores as well.
12. Kazuki Ramen
One word: ramen. Do you really need to know more?
