If you've never had an older sibling go through high school, it can be terrifying to start at a new school. You basically have no idea what you're getting yourself into. If you've seen any teen movie, you know some bizarre things happen in high school. Dating can be a pain, making friends is a nightmare, and trying to fit in overall is the must frustrating. Plus, nobody really knows what to expect when going into high school. Everyone's experience is different. But as I look back on the worst four years of my schooling experience, I can confidently say that these movies did absolutely nothing to help me mentally prepare myself for entering high school.

1. 10 Things I Hate About You

Giphy

When a guy gets paid to date you, he probably won't start to fall in love with you in the process. Don't even expect it to happen.

2. High School Musical

Giphy

If you're a member of the "Math-letes," odds are, you won't be the lead in the school play. You just won't have the time to do both.

3. Grease

Giphy

If you're lucky enough to be crushed on by the school bad-boy, he probably won't sing about his feelings for you.

4. Ferris Bueller's Day Off

Giphy

Your principal won't care enough about you skipping school to break into your house. And if he does, you might want to call the police.

5. The Princess Diaries 2

Giphy

Your grandma probably isn't the queen of a country... so you won't get the option of marrying an eligible bachelor prince. I'm sorry😩

6. Footloose

Giphy

Your helicopter dad won't suddenly permit you to disobey his insane rules, especially not when you're dating the new rebellious kid in town.

7. The Amazing Spider-Man

Giphy

You won't be the result of a science experiment, so stop waiting for your superpowers to develop.

8. Aquamarine

Giphy

Your dreams about the cute lifeguard falling in love with you will remain dreams. Good luck finding a mermaid to make them come true.

9. A Cinderella Story

Giphy

You won't find the man of your dreams at a school masquerade--or will you?

10. Hairspray

Giphy

Getting on a tv show about dancing as a high schooler is near impossible.

11. The Harry Potter series

Giphy

Where do I even begin? I should've known it was all too good to be true😭Accio tissue.

12. Mean Girls

Giphy

Let's face it. This is the most realistic and relatable movie about high schoolers. Being the new kid and getting excluded? Been there. Wanting to leap across the table at someone you don't like? Done that.

But seriously, high school is tough to navigate. The worst thing you can do is assume that it will be like one of these movies. Never walk into a cafeteria and burst into song. No one will sing with you, and you will be laughed at.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
