Every year, millions of people across the globe participate in hijinks and practical jokes on the glorious day known as April Fool’s Day.
Sadly, I was never able to get away with much on this unofficial holiday because I feared the wrath of my mother. Even if it was something as simple as a whoopee cushion or snake peanut brittle can, I wouldn’t have put it past her to send me to my room afterward. (You’re welcome, mom.)
Despite a lack of time spent pulling jokes on people, I was able to gain a much more useful skill through hours upon hours devoted to the hit series Gilmore Girls: Being myself in my own comical, sassy way. Particularly with the reboot of the show through Netflix, which finally gave audiences the much deserved and desired ending that the original series missed, Gilmore Girls has popped up throughout the internet on a wider scale than was ever imagined. The quirky, lovable characters of Stars Hollow have found, or perhaps rediscovered, their places in the hearts of both old and new fans.
This show has undoubtedly played a role in who I have become. It's why I embrace the silliness that it provides. Sometimes, it's all you need when you've had a rough day.
Whether you watched the series unfold throughout the 2000s on what was then known as ABC family, or if you’ve been watching the reruns on what is now Freeform, Gilmore Girls has featured a distinctive array of characters. These characters, while not exactly traditional April fools on just one particular day of the year, are rather silly and twenty-four/seven. This is, my friends, the beauty of the show.
Here are prime examples of Lorelai, Rory, and friends simply being themselves. Otherwise known as, ridiculous:
1. The time Jess’s car was deviled-egged.
Oh, how we’ve all thought about doing this to someone we’re unfortunate to know.
2. That time Rory went around smelling the old books at Yale.
3. Lorelai. Dead Bodies. Vacuum.
Oh.
4. When Emily Gilmore was just trying to get a point across.
As Millenials would say: Savage.
5.That time Lorelai connected pie and dating
Dating a pie actually sounds pretty great.
6. Suddenly, Luke became poetic
Many aspire to reach this level in a relationship.
7. They make vacations sound so thrilling!
8. When Paris was...well, Paris.
9. It's really easy to connect with Richard Gilmore.
Stuffed crust makes everything better.
10. Or maybe, you just really jive with Kirk.
One of the true stars of Stars Hollow.
11. When Taylor's logic skills were put to the test.
Whatever it means, we're gonna use it.
Similarly to how April Fools day is an escape from the daily trials and tribulations we encounter during the other 364 days of the year, some television shows manage to do this for us whenever they air.
Maybe Gilmore Girls isn't your cup of tea, but the stories and memories of these nonsensical, unique characters can lighten anyone's day. It's the happy moments we experience that make life worth living, even if the moments are happening through the screen.
