12 Things You Learn Going To College In Baltimore

Whether you're from across the States, studying abroad, or even living near Maryland nothing can prepare you for the culture shock that is Baltimore.

You'll be bleeding Orioles Orange and Ravens Purple before you even realize it with this list of Baltimore truths:

1. They really love crabs.

And, you'll have a lot of difficulty eating them for the first time. Be sure to wear clothes you don't care about, and bring Maryland natives to show you how it's done.

2. Old Bay: Fries, potato chips, you name it, it's on it.

There is never a shortage. If you don't have it, your neighbor down the hall will.

3. The Maryland State flag is obsessive.

Whether it's university attire, the Raven's jersey and pretty much anything else that could have a flag on it, it exists. Maryland rubber ducks, anyone?

4. Maryland residents combine the love of crabs and their flag by placing a magnet on every vehicle they own.

It's impossible to walk through any parking lot or drive down a highway without seeing them.

5. Baltimore is not sure if they're from the North or the South.
Being below the Mason-Dixon line and identifying as Northern has it's challenges.

6. Country music becomes more enjoyable then you ever thought possible.

You'll learn to appreciate the dance parties in your car while listening to WPOC. Trust me. You. WILL.

7. It's pronounced BALDIMORE. The 't' is silent.

Even Tracy Turnblad got that one wrong.

8. Everyone talks about their hometowns by county, not the actual town. (HoCo, MoCo, BoCo)

Just nod and smile, boys.

9. During the National Anthem, Baltimore residents scream OHHHHHH during "OhhhhH!!! say does that Star Spangled.."

Supporters of the opposing teams are easy to spot when this moment occurs.

10. No one uses a turning signal, knows how to turn into their correct lane, or come to a complete stop.

PLEASE LEARN HOW TO DRIVE. And, watch out for Baltimore County speed cameras on I-695.

11. On Sunday's, it's necessary to cheer for the Ravens to win because that means one thing: FREE MEDIUM COFFEE MONDAY.
FREE IS FOR ME.

12. They have more pride for their city, and state, than any other in the country.

And, you cannot imagine yourself being anywhere else.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
