If you're not a country music fan or you've been hiding under a rock for the past couple of years, let me introduce you to the most witty and honest female voice in country music right now.Kacey Musgraves is a Texas-born singer/songwriter who has earned her fame by doing what every one dreams of: being completely unashamed of who she is as a person.
I think it is incredibly important for people to know that there is someone like her out there right now creating music without filtering herself for others. She has a classic 70s era feel, tied with a country bow, but what is so fascinating about her is that her writing really sounds like something you would text your best friend. She sings only about what she knows. Kacey has a talent for writing what other people want to say but can't quite put into words. Everyone can relate to a break-up song, but I've never seen someone be able to relay situations or the thoughts someone in their 20s quite like she can. She simply doesn't care what others have to say; she's going to speak her own truth and sing about what she wants in her unapologetic way, and that's definitely something to be admired.
Here are 12 times Kacey said exactly what we all needed to hear:
1. "You can't be everybody's cup of tea
Some like it bitter, some like it sweet
Nobody's everybody's favorite
So you might as well make it how you please
You can't be everybody's cup of tea"
- Cup of Tea
No matter what you do in life, someone will disapprove and think you’re wrong. You might as well do what you want to do and be who you want to be.
2. "Sometimes I talk before I think, I try to fake it but I can't
I'd rather lose for what I am than win for what I ain't"
- Pageant Material
3. "Just 'cause I ain't lived through
The same hand that was dealt to you
Doesn't make me any less or make any more of you"
- Undermine
4. "Cause if you're ever gonna find a four leaf clover
You gotta get a little dirt on your hands"
- Silver Lining
If we want something good in life, we have to be willing to work for it and go through all the bad to finally get to the good, whatever that may be.
5. "Mind your own biscuits and life will be gravy"
- Biscuits
6. "Step off
Yeah you’re getting too close to me
With all your negativity
Just get lost"
- Step Off
This is basically what you should say to anyone being annoying at any time and in any situation. It may sound harsh, but harsh can be necessary.
7. "Just 'cause you can't beat 'em
Don't mean you should join 'em"
- Follow Your Arrow
8. "We can't do it over
They say it's now or never and all we're ever gettin' is older
Before we get to heaven, baby let's give 'em hell
We might as well
Cause we don't know when we're done
So let's love hard, live fast, die fun"
- Die Fun
9. "Sticks and stones
May build a throne
But you’ll be up there all alone"
- Step Off
Don’t let negative people interfere with what you are doing, and never treat people lesser than you to make them feel bad. Negative people end up feeling alone when they truly need someone.
10. "Friends come in handy but family is family"
- Family is Family
Friends make everything in life easier and more fun, but your family is always going to withstand the test of time and would do anything for you.
11. "We're all good, but we ain't angels
We all sin, but we ain't devils
We're all pots and we're all kettles
But we can't see it in ourselves"
- Somebody to Love
I love this, because I think everyone can take something from it. We can all be a
little more understanding of others so having someone point it out, even if
subtle, is a good reminder to be more loving.
12. "I've never gotten taller makin' someone else feel small
If you ain't got nothin' nice to say don't say nothin' at all"
- Biscuits
With just 2 major albums out, Kacey Musgraves has reintroduced the notion that honesty has a place in music these days. Agree with her or not, you have to respect a girl that can speak her mind and sound so elegant while encouraging self-acceptance from others. Go check out her new album, Pageant Material, it'll do your heart some good and my words just can't do it justice.
