Within the past year, the world has been reintroduced to the world of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter with a new book and stage play. In the years before that, we were gifted with three theme parks (located in Orlando, Japan, and Hollywood), short stories, and insider information revealed via her Twitter account. But at the time when it seemed nothing more could be done and even the Pottermore Sorting (for Hogwarts and Ilvermorny) and Patronus quizzes could not fulfill our Potter excitement, Rowling did something spectacular: she announced a new movie! Five new movies, actually. With the release of "Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them" still a few days away, it gives us plenty of time to revisit the characters that we already know and love.
As someone who has read the books and watched the movies more times than most people would care to admit, I needed something new to do with the characters. So, since we don't have the Weird Sisters here in the muggle/no-maj world, here are my guesses for what some Potter character's favorite songs might be if they were introduced our music.
(WARNING: There are some spoilers ahead.)
1. Draco Malfoy - Demons by Imagine Dragons
Throughout the story, Draco Malfoy is a clearly conflicted character. How could he not be? He starts off his first year at Hogwarts believing that he is the end-all, be-all only to have his offer of friendship be rejected by the most famous wizard of his generation (a.k.a. Harry Potter). Then, as he grows older, he has to struggle between choosing good and bad, right and wrong. This is pretty difficult when your parents are some of the top Death Eaters working for Voldemort. So naturally, he tries to do his best to please everyone, thus creating plenty of internal demons that constantly challenge what he has been brought up to know as correct.
2. Nymphadora Tonks - I'm In Love With A Monster by Fifth Harmony
While Remus Lupin may be the best monster that she could have possibly fallen for, Tonks definitely goes through a lot of hardships when she announces her love for the werewolf. Not even Lupin himself is all that up for the relationship when Tonks first begins to show affection for him. Of course, everything ended up working out in her favor and she got to marry and have a child with him.
3. Remus Lupin - Hungry Like The Wolf by Duran Duran
Get it? Because he's a werewolf? HAHAHAHA! HA...ha.. Yeah, but really that's about it. Hopefully Lupin has a good sense of humor behind all that seriousness.
4. Hermione Granger - Tell Me Something I Don't Know by Selena Gomez
"That is the second time you have spoken out of turn, Miss Granger. Tell me, are you incapable of restraining yourself, or do you take pride in being an insufferable know-it-all?" - Professor Snape
But really, it was no secret that Hermione Granger knew everything there was to know about pretty much every topic (She wasn't all that fond of Divination, now was she?). She was at top of her class before the Second Wizarding War and the Battle of Hogwarts, and I'm pretty sure she could have been again when she returned to Hogwarts after the war to finish her education, which is something not too many other seventh years did.
5. Severus Snape - That Should Be Me by Justin Bieber
If you did not cry during The Prince's Tale, either while reading it or watching it, I'm convinced the Dementors sucked out your soul. Snape literally devoted his entire life to Lily Potter (née Evans), his childhood friend and lifelong crush, only to have her run off with James Potter in the end. And even if we wouldn't have had Harry should Lily have picked Snape, you have to admit they would have made a cute couple - her with her bright, happy personality bringing out the best in him and the endless love that he would provide her with. Ugh - my heart can't take the thought of it!
6. Luna Lovegood - Mad Hatter by Melanie Martinez
From the minute we are introduced to her, it's clear that Luna is an... interesting character. But yet there is something just so naïve and innocent about her that people can't help but fall in love with her. Plus, her strange sayings and beliefs definitely provide some comedic relief in some of the tenser situations presented in the later books/movies in the Potter series.
7. Ron Weasley - Stand By You by Rachel Platten
His best friend is The Chosen One. His other best friend is the brightest witch of her age. Yet, Ron Weasley stood by them even when he felt like he was nothing in comparison (Remember Goblet of Fire when Harry was a Tri-Wizard Tournament Champion and Hermione was being hit up by the greatest Quidditch player of the age?). Even when he left them in the forest in The Deathly Hallows, Ron came back and helped the remainder of the journey to defeat Voldemort. That has to take a lot of dedication. He's definitely one friend worth keeping around because there is no doubt that he will always stand by you.
8. Harry Potter - Fight Song by Rachel Platten
Perhaps it's ironic that the two best friends have songs by the same artist? But this is truly a song that fits Harry Potter. His whole life he has been told that he is something special, but does not believe it. Then when he finally does, no one else does. If you really listen to the lyrics, there are odds that you can relate nearly every moment described back to a moment that Harry faces in the books. I'm not sure if Rachel Platten is a Potter fan, but it sure seems like she could be with these lyrics.
9. Neville Longbottom - Brave by Sara Bareilles
Someone who was looked at as a very weak, clumsy character to begin with, ended up being one of the biggest heroes of the series. Like, seriously though. This guy killed the last remaining Horcrux in order for Harry to kill Voldemort. He stood up against Voldemort to the guy's face. There weren't even some of Voldemort's followers that would do that! Then he restarted Dumbledore's Army, took torture from the Carrow Twins in place of first years, stood up to his friends, defended his opinion even if it was unpopular... Seriously, all the little stuff adds up and shows that Neville Longbottom was definitely not the nerdy kid with the toad.
10. Bellatrix Lestrange - Dangerous Woman by Ariana Grande
Something tells me that Bellatrix Lestrange was not born with an undying lust for blood. Of course, she was raised to believe that she was superior because she was pureblood and that all muggles/muggleborns were scum, but it was only once she joined Voldemort's forces that she became very violent. In other words, something 'bout him made her feel like a dangerous woman...
11. Moaning Myrtle - Cry Baby by Melanie Martinez
You would think after 50 years, she would be over her death, but apparently not. She continues to haunt the second floor girl's restroom and cry for eternity. Personally, I think that she should take a word or two from Nearly-Headless Nick. That poor guy has to live the rest of his ghostly live with his head hanging from a very thin piece of skin on his neck. At least she's perfectly normal. Emotional. But normal.
12. Dobby - Chandelier
Well, I mean...
