Although I have not been serving for long, I have already gone through a whirlwind of emotions and thoughts while doing it. I've come to realize that serving is actually an awesome job. But that's if you are a people person and enjoy helping others. You also have to have a little bit of thick skin, because people will get upset, as well as not like your companies food. And although you might not have messed up their order, or done anything wrong at all-- people will still yell at you.
1. When you're walking into the restaurant, and not ready for your shift.
You know you have to go in, but you're just not quite ready for it.
2. When you're up next to get a table, and you hear the customers say there will be a party of 8 or more.
Yes, most of the time the people are amazing and tip very well in the end. But the initial emotion is terror.. Straight up terror.
3. When you see little kids sit at one of the tables in your section.
So many cute kiddos!
4. When it's a dinner rush and you just want your table to have their food, yet the kitchen is taking forever to even get appetizers out.
5. But the cooks are doing their best and try to make you laugh so you don't cry.
So you kind of have to love them for it. And they also make you food every once in a while, so pretty much you can't stay mad.
6. When you get sat with an awesome table and get along with them really well, it makes everything so much better.
You're able to just have normal conversations like it you've known them for more than 25 minutes.
7. When you get tipped over 20 percent on a tab.
Most of the time, I feel like crying of happiness.
8. The moment you see that the expos and bus boys have done their jobs, and have made your stress level go down tremendously.
9. But when they haven't.....
10. The moment you see a friend or family member walk in is like none other.
You get to have one more table, but they will be a bit more lenient. It's the best of both worlds because it's kind of their job to still love you even if their drinks get low.
11. My favorite thing is when the schedule comes out.
My number one question is, do you want me to be sane?! We're supposed to be smiling all the time, yet you are not allowing me to rest!
12. The feeling you have when your shift is finally over, you can cash out, and go home.
Nothing like money in your hand and your bed on your mind.
But even after all of the emotions you go through during a shift, I love my job. I love to be able to serve people and share stories and laughter with them. I highly recommend, if you are a people person, to get into this business. It's an awesome feeling to see people walk out with smiles on their faces.
