If you're anything like me, you can binge read just as much as you can binge watch. In high school, I spent my Fridays at Hastings getting three or four new books only to need to buy more the next week. I've read a little bit of everything and aside from the typical series', I've found some good books that you won't be able to put down:
1. Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson
Hands-down my favorite book. I bawled through the entire thing but that could have been the fact that I was what you call a "wintergirl" But that's okay. I am thawing.
2. Dangerous Girls by Abigail Haas
If you liked Gone Girl, this is a good one to read. It switches from present day to before the trip to after the death of a friend. It can be hard to follow at times but it keeps you hooked all the way up to the end.
3. Something Like Normal by Trish Doller
A member of the military comes home suffering from PTSD. It was raw and real. Despite what the cover may show, it wasn't a romance. There was a guy. There was a girl. But I did fall in love with Travis as the story went on.
4. Boy on Ice: the Life and Death of Derek Boogaard by John Branch
Boy on Ice is the reason I am in the major I'm in right now. It's hard to read. It hurt to think that an athlete that was so loved, was going through so much pain. He was prescribed hundreds of pills each week and the NHL still is trying to ignore the effects of concussions and excessive fighting.
5. It's Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini
It really is kind of a funny story. It's also ironic and you wonder if you will go to hell if you laugh at something. It was written after being in a mental hospital himself. But I'm here to tell you that he was pretty spot on with the whole psych ward thing. Unfortunately, Vizzini lost his battle with depression in December of 2013.
6. Between by Jessica Warman
Girl dies. Hangs around for a while, not that she has a choice. She meets another ghost who helps her figure out why she has to stay around her friends that don't care much about her death.
7. Hoot by Carl Hiaasen
A few teenage kids get together to save some owls. More of a children's book but nonetheless, one I've read a few times.
8. Choker by Elizabeth Woods
It's another one of those "who is the murderer" books. Somehow they always seem to find their way into my library.
9. Unstoppable: From Underdog to Undefeated: How I Became a Champion by Anthony Robles
Anthony Robles was born without a leg. He didn't come from a family with money. Basically all odds were stacked against him and his single mother. But in his story, he finds strength. Not just to get through every day life, but also to win an NCAA wrestling championship.
10. Shut Out by Kody Keplinger
The football and soccer girlfriends are tired of the rivalry between the teams. What do they do? Refuse to give it up until the boys settle down. Then it comes down to who can keep their pants on the longest.
11. Insomnia by J.R. Johansson
In a weird sort of romance, a boy falls for a girl. Just because of what she dreams. Instead of dreaming, or sleeping really, he sees the same thing the last person he's made eye contact with. But with her, it's different.
12. Anything Ellen Hopkins has published.
With a poem formatting, her books are an easy read. I can fly through one in a few hours. They focus on everything from drug addiction to prostitution to suicide. My personal favorite is Perfect but they all are very well written.
