To start this off, I am not a musical theatre kid. I have never been one, but I do appreciate the music of some Broadway musicals such as "Wicked," because who could resist Idina Menzel’s vocals on the original soundtrack? But, that's beside the point. Movie musicals are works of art that should be greatly appreciated, so here are 12 of the greats.
1. "Les Miserables."
Sometimes it may seem boring, but if you’re a fan of the novel or of the original play, the movie adaptation will not disappoint.
2. "Moulin Rouge."
There is just something about it that catches the eye.
3. "High School Musical."
Dare I say it, it's probably responsible for the reason young adults born in the mid-to-late '90s enjoy the theatre.
4. "Rent."
Between the story and the music, it's great and everyone must watch this movie at least three times.
5. "Chicago."
The "Cell Block Tango" scene will always be iconic and we will continue painting the town.
6. "West Side Story."
Almost every movie musical after the original "West Side Story" musical has followed the same plot, boy and girl from different worlds falling in love. Thank you for inspiring.
7. "Grease."
A classic without a doubt, and rightfully so because sometimes you forget that John Travolta at one point could sing.
8. "Hairspray."
Whether it's John Waters’ 1988 version with Divine or the 2007 version with Zac Efron and John Travolta, the songs will have you on your feet.
9. "The Wiz."
The African-American version of "The Wizard of Oz" starring Diana Ross and Michael Jackson. Who could turn that down?
10. "The Rocky Horror Picture Show."
A cult classic that hopefully never goes out of style.
11. "Hercules."
One of the best Disney movies not because it’s not about a princess, but because we all want Muses narrating our lives.
12. "High School Musical 2."
Although the first movie is on the list, the second "High School Musical" movie has a more unique plot and supplied the greatest brea up song, “Gotta Go My Own Way.”
There is no denying that these 12 movies are great in their own right. Of course there are many more such as "The Wizard of Oz" and "Sweeney Todd" that deserve just as much recognition as these but the list has to end somewhere!
